I don‘t intend to hijack your thread Ruthless, but while we‘re on the subject, can someone else answer this question for me, too?

I‘ve read a lot about how you can get heck for not addressing your superiors by their rank, and saluting specific ranks as well. One, which ranks does this generally fall under? Two, is there an easy way of telling apart all the different ranks, besides memorizing the various patches listed here?

Thanks.

You missed a couple of ranks Ruthless.

Experiance will teach you & the library.
They can do most anything that they want.
Check QR & O,s for more details.

Cycophant, pay respects to any gold you see.
You can,t lose that way.
Check the library for rank structure.

Or you can learn the hard way. :D
Your call.
Never forget to say Sir/Madame for officers.

Which library do you speak of?

And I agree - better to be safe than sorry, so I‘d just always address them formally until told otherwise. But when speaking/greeting someone, you use their rank, correct? So is there a "relatively" easy way of figuring out people‘s ranks fast? Or does it just take experience and memorization to learn the different rank patches?

Sorry, any public libary has a mil section.
You may even find it on -line.

As for learning the rank, you just have to
learn them,& when you get rank you will
be sensitive to people who do not know yours.

Heh, I have a feeling a General probably wouldn‘t enjoy that salutation :)

Thanks for the help, Windwolf. I think I‘ll start trying to memorize them now. I have a feeling it might save me a fair bit of trouble, later on.

Corporals are the back bone of the army. They know all the inns and outs to get the job done right, as quickly as possible :)

The title Sgt. Major is an appointment rather than associated with the praticular rank.
I.E. A W.O. can be a Sgt. Major, it depends on the size of the unit.

I‘m just wondering, if there are Private (Recruit), Private, Private First Class, etc.

MCpl is a rank just like every other rank.
The Rank structure should be updated to reflect this. You have to be a MCpl to get to Sgt, there’s no way around it. If MCpl were an appointment (in the true sense of the word) then in theory you could be promoted from Cpl directly to Sgt, but that‘s not the case is it...?

As it is now, you must put in your time as a Cpl, show some aptitude and potential, complete the prerequisites and maybe get PROMOTED, not appointed to MCpl. Once you make it that far, you do it all over again to make it to Sgt.

Enjoy your careers...

No, MCpl is an appoinment according to the QR&O‘S Chapter 3 section 1
3.08 – MASTER CORPORAL APPOINTMENT

(1) The Chief of the Defence Staff or such officer as he may designate may appoint a corporal as a master corporal.
(2) The rank of a master corporal remains that of corporal.
