Maybe. Maybe not. Usually when a Westminster-style parliament switches to a republic, they directly replace the GG with a ceremonial President with similar costs. The President of India’s official residence is the same residence formerly used by the Governor-General, and before that the Viceroy.

Some newly-transitioned republics even add costs with the transition — when Ireland went from a ceremonial Governor-General to a ceremonial President, they added Presidential elections to the mix.

One interpretation of the Canadian Constitution is that it doesn’t matter what the UK does, the King of Canada is still the King unless the Canadian parliament and all 10 provinces make a change. (Section 41(a) of the Constitution Act 1982)

Another interpretation is that the requirement for “a Constitution similar in Principle to that of the United Kingdom” (1867 Constitution Act) means that if the UK makes a major change, then Canada is required to follow suit.

I lean towards the first interpretation myself — the specific rule (changing the office of the monarch) beats the general rule (similar in principle).

It would depend on governance model is landed on. If the US-style combined HoS/HoG, then obviously you only have to expense of one office. If a HoS is retained, elected or otherwise, then those costs are retained. Particularly if it is a largely ceremonial role. We're not going to give them an office under the stairs.

If we were to move away from a Westminsterian parliamentary system, the entire structure and function of the government would have to change.

The Crown is a symbol that is embodied by the person who is Charles III at this moment. I have no issues with this process because the monarch is 99.9% ceremonial (the government has to really fubar things for the monarch to use the Thor’s hammer that they do possess) and has no real effect on our day to day life.

In the USA they pledge allegiance to the constitution which used to be a pretty tangible and solidly revered document but has now been soiled and ignored by the cabal of morons inhabiting the WH.

I don't know enough about it, so tanks. I agree we should vote on them. We should vote on a lot more decisions also. Senators, Supreme Court Justices, Ethics Commissioner, and a lot more. We need recall legislation and even possibly impeachment legislation. I'm willing to take the extra time behind the curtain to vote on more than my MP. Open the Constitution and keep at it until there is no wiggle room for for anyone to slip in around the back. Oh, one last thing. Politicians work for us, we should be the ones to determine changes to their pensions and pay. Not them.
