What is Mechanized Infantry?

I‘ve heard this term used many times but I have no idea what it is. Will someone help me out on this definition?

Infantry with some sort of APC whether wheeled or tracked as part of its Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E).

If you join the infantry do you choose if you are mechanized or light infantry? or are you assigned?

At some point during your training you be asked which battalion you‘d like to be posted to (1 & 2 are Mech, 3 is Light), but whether you get sent there or not depends on factors I don‘t pretend to understand.

When I was an Infanteer there was no choice except which Regiment you would join ,you were sent where someone decided you were needed.
