I just wanted to get members' opinions on what your favorite War movie or TV series would be. Why?

Overall,

I'd have to go with Band of Brothers........Excellent series. Great acting, based on fact.......Loved it

In no particular order, but i thought all of these were great:
Band of Brothers - same as hitman
Saving Private Ryan - (some of the foolish military errors aside) thought the acting and characters were excellent.. hanks especially
Platoon - an excellent story and one of the first excellent vietnam war movies ever made
Full Metal Jacket - one of the first good portrayals of marine boot camp... stanley kubrick almost never fails with movies.

Black Hawk Down wasnt a bad movie either..... Jarhead looks like it could be good, factual or fictional, whatever it turns out to be.

Ive never seen the movie tigerland but somebody told me it was good... is it ?

I've read some harsh reviews from serving US soldiers and Marines on this show.......

but that being said, I am thoroughly enjoying "Over There" on the History Channel. Very good acting (with an exception or two) and focuses on more than just straight combat.

That was one of my big beefs with "Tour of Duty", tons of combat pretty much every episode with the same group of guys.....I swear, that one squad took out a few regiments of VC and NVA by the time that show was over and done with!!

remember that old show Combat! It was mostly black and white... i used to watch it at lunchtimes when i went to school in like 7th grade... the same 5 guys killed at least 10,000 germans.

Europa Europa. If you can find it check it out. For those of you in the GTA I think that Queen Video on Queen West would have a copy of it. Heres a link to it from the IMDB.

i enjoy all the movies that have been brought up, I'm currently watching over there well i guess not anymore since the last episode aired tonight. some you guys are forgeting are A few good men, Apocalypse Now, Green Berets, the great escape, We Were Soldiers, Courage Under Fire, Rules of Engagement, Hart's War...  BTW i thought Tigerland was a great movie although its not really a war movie, its more of a boot camp movie.

Stalingrad (1993) was okay, best WW II movie to date is probably The Bridge at Remagen (1968), BoB gets best miniseries hands down.

The Dieppe miniseries on CBC was good as far as Canadian content goes; better than just good in fact.  I see someone is doing a film on the Black Watch at Verrierres Ridge now - why we continue to handwring over our disasters and never memorialize our triumphs is beyond me.

A Bridge Too Far......really long like movie but interesting.
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Tigerland

Thats about it.

Saving Private Ryan, The Thing Red Line, Band of Brothers, Platoon, All quiet on the western front, das boot, Tora tora tora, Flight of the Intruder & Top Gun. Yes, I know some are really chee-zee (Top Gun) and some are really old and have brutal special effects but I LOVE THEM! There are more I used to watch with my Dad but I can't remember their titles.

By far though my favorite war shows are the documentaries on true war stories that air on History before November 11th with stories like the battle of the bulge, d-day, famous Canadian battles and heroes like Smokey Smith.

That was one of my big beefs with "Tour of Duty", tons of combat pretty much every episode with the same group of guys.....I swear, that one squad took out a few regiments of VC and NVA by the time that show was over and done with!!

But Tour of Duty was Tour of Duty. You couldn't watch because it was so fake but you couldn't look away either. I have been catching the odd episode on the History channel after work.

Now THAT was a quality TV series  ;D Sergeant Saunders and his special tommy gun he carried that he never had to reload! I always found that hysterical in that show....no reloading, and I swear I never saw a single soldier bring the sights up, just blaze away from the hip!

Still, I loved that show just because it could be so thoroughly corny, but it was a ton of fun to watch. They used to have it on everyday on the History Channel, but then they changed the daily dose of drama to Tour of Duty, and then to JAG (yuck)

I stopped watched JAG after they took the friendly fire incident in Afghanistan and twisted it into an episode in which the pilot was justified in dropping ordnance. Granted it was a fictional episode and not based on the actual incident, but you could tell from where their inspiration sprang. JAG, especially in the newer episodes I've glanced at, has a habit of taking factual events and twisting them.....I was "obliged" to watch a newer episode at a friend's house a few weeks back, and I could not believe the massive right-wing spin they've imparted on the show.

Hmmm, seem to have gone off on a bit of a rant there........

Gotta be Band of Brothers, speaking of which anyone heard of the plans for the new upcoming series on the pacific campaign?.

Sounds good, all new cast.

Clint Eastwood is doing not one but two movies on Iwo Jima - one from the Japanese POV and the other from the American POV.  The US film follows the six guys who raised the second flag on Suribachi; three were killed in a few days, Ira Hayes became something of a celeb after the war, but not for the right reasons.  Both look to be worth watching.

Who remembers "THE RAT PATROL"  50s mounted on jeeps chasing the germans and  badguys thru the sands of Africa.
always chasing the same german officer it seems, i think after capturing him once or twice and him escaping I would just shot him with the 50 that  could take on tanks , half tracks and other armoured cars and win.
great fun to watch as a kid.....now I know the limits of the 50 cal not so much fun

do not forget the A Team, but that is just a group of Vets running around the States.
lots of gun fire never hit anyone, think they had a couple story lines about being shot.
they could fire a ton of bullets and never hot anyone...think the US Special Forces would get upset by this lack of shooting skills, or be amazed the training of their men do shoot so close and not hit anyone does wonders for them.

all fun shows so far, watched most of them listed here at one time or another

Heartbreak Ridge

Cuz the good guys are heroes, and the bad guys are politically correct weenies.

Full Metal Jacket - just for the DI

Iron Eagle IV and Alexander.....

Wait a sec, nope.  I've always liked Braveheart, not quite modern but good.  The other ones I like are Enemy at the Gates, Blackhawk Down, and a few really original choices (BOB, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon).

Also looking forward to Jarhead.

"Where Eagles Dare."

The part where they show all the paratroopers landing in the snow and one of the guys pancakes, and very probably tears half of the ligaments in his body, definitely stands out in my head.

Another good one from the German POV at the end of WWII is "Downfall."

Otherwise, everything else has been mentioned.
