Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

All carbon tax wasn’t removed, just the consumer portion. Taxes will increase on industry who will just pass it on to consumer, except with no rebate this time. Canadians get what they deserve. Elbows up!

And that was never promised. The consumer portion was ended during the election but detractors held onto the belief that because the legislation wasn’t dropped that it would just be back again.

Now that they remove the law, detractors need a new outrage despite getting exactky what they wanted.

Most of those detractors self-identify as industrial polluters, dontcha know ;)

Doesn't quite fit but on the topic of economic development, major AI data investments coming to Canada. An important element to note - all three provinces have reliable, cheap and plentiful electricity. BC, MB and QC respectively. Conventional energy is important in the present and near-term, but the future will inevitably be renewal and nuclear.

ah but it was but not by Carney. Pierre intended to kill it completely. Carney simply split the part that directly affects you away from the real money maker for the government. They now save on the rebates but the end result is all production in Canada labours under a very hefty tax for carbon and developing a new oil field or building a pipeline is going to cost you big time. And that's if you can because until the no more pipeline bill is rescinded (not likely) NGO's and other special interest groups with deep pockets can stall development for as long as it takes to cause the developer to look for easier ways to make a buck

This is they (progressives) get to the "no social licence" or "no business case" part of O&G. It's by design.

Meanwhile the world demand keeps increasing.

Remember the same people who want to shut down all industry in Canada for the ‘environment’ are more than ok with importing any goods from other countries with no controls and slave labour. Shipping said goods also burns insane amounts of fuel as well (container ships burn over 1 billion cars worth of fuel every year).

Heaven forbid we make products in country using fair labour and environmental protections.

Oh and don’t forget if you want to do business here we shall tax you heavily for it, but those countries without controls pay no taxes or tariffs to compensate. We are literally subsidizing our competitors to the detriment of Canadians.

Somebody connected to the government is getting a benefit to the detriment of this country over this.

The lower and middle classes got sold out in the 90s. This is just a continuation of it. The rich got a lot richer and the rest of us got a lot poorer and are continuing on that declining slope.

Trickle down economics is definitely one aspect to blame.

That is grotesquely untrue. The story of class mobility in Canada (and the US) is upward movement from the middle to upper class, and lower to middle class. The wealth disparity between the extreme rich and everyone else has increased, but it's risibly absurd to resent a handful of super-rich people and pretend that particular relative measure amounts to "poorer". What matters is that real poverty and low-income subsistence continues to be eroded.

Purchasing power has been decimated for the average person compared to previous generations. Things like housing and food are way up but the impression of eroded purchasing power is lessened by the fact luxuries are cheaper. Sure a flat screen TV is cheaper, but does that really matter if housing has tripled or quadrupled the rate of inflation for the past 20 years?

Housing only. Food is still more relatively affordable; recent bumps haven't erased the long-term trend.

Yes. Very few people are actually living under bridges. Worrying about making ends meet is timeless, but a comparison about how such people live today as opposed to 50 or 75 or 100 years ago is instructive. How many days has anyone here gone hungry in his life?

We need to return to the glory days of the 50s...when the corporate tax rate was 45% 😂

Reaganomics has been a disaster for the working man.
And the highest income tax bracket had a tax rate of 90%.

The same people lamenting the current situation are likely to lament any of that as a solution…

Is there any point mentioning those tax rates without mentioning the tax breaks that meant few if any people or corporations paid those rates? Nothing useful can be concluded without examining the whole picture, unless the aim is to experience an emotional surge.
