Start with Paul (noted civil libertarian), Murkowski (moderate), and Collins (moderate) in the Senate. That gets to 50.
Some (Senate and House members) undoubtedly would try to avoid taking a position. But if military personnel are even perceived to be involved in routine policing (as opposed to exceptional civil disturbances), anyone actively taking a position in support would run a risk of ending his political aspirations forever. That includes Vance and his assumed presidential ambitions if for some reason he had to cast a tie-breaking vote.

I'm not sure how incompetence is better, but he actively whipped up a crowd that was equipped and prepared for attacking police and storming the capitol, so seems like it was both malice and incompetence.

One or two will be allowed to vote against if they don’t need the votes. And MAGA will go along with whatever Dear Leader says.

Read the link. Many different people were involved. Trump's direct involvement and influence on what the people responsible were actually doing was very limited. Surely it's not painful to accept events as they were, not as the narrators want them to be.
I still find it impressive that they can muster a bunch of part-timers for useful work on such short notice, even given that some in the administration and Guard had anticipated a tasking even if the municipal and Congressional leadership refused offers. Imagine trying to mobilize the Res F in any of our major metro areas for some time-critical task.

I didn’t say they’re acolytes. I said they’re spineless, gormless weasels like our Liberal caucus were with Trudeau. Please show me where Senate Republicans blocked any of Trump’s significant initiatives or appointments, other than Matt Gaetz, only because they personally detested him. They will vote against their boss if there is enough other votes to vote in favour.

What do appointments have to do with Congress asserting its authority in DC if the administration starts using NG to routinely support police? Not everything is a square peg to be pounded into the same round anti-Trump hole.

As much as I enjoy disagreeing with @Brad Sallows on things, he’s much closer the mark on the comments above than others.
DC Metro’s chief was fired for faking crime numbers, mainly unbelievably low crime rates. Plus DC Metro has long been a bastion of criminal activity in its own.
Now, I don’t think that Federalizing the LE is the right thing to do, nor make it directly responsible to Pam Bondi, nor do I think that being in the ARNG for LE is a good idea, and I think that a lot of Politicians here will agree.
But I know a bunch of folks who work in DC, and even the ones who carry guns for work think the situation is a tad unpleasant.
So I don’t have a good solution as DC Metro needs a giant restructure and cleansing - I’m just concerned about how it’s going to be handled.

The ARNG is more organized for call ups as they are used more for it. Many are called up compulsorily albeit there is a fair group that do volunteer, like here. The legislation is there in Canada as well. The political and military leadership will to use the legislation is another matter. We tend to look to the RegF. The RegF moved damned quickly in Oct 70 and for Oka.
ResF has the potential to move more quickly than the RegF - due to their already being in the cities - so long as they were trained and organized and rehearsed from time to time. Since they do not get called out for that, the need to train, organize and rehearse is mute . . . and the capability is, accordingly, non-existent.

Keep in mind this is all a distraction. He is still trying to shake Epstein, I hope they are forced to release those files. Whatever is in them has to be good to have them fight so hard to keep them out of sight.

People seem to be hoping there's something in there that will nail Trump, and limiting themselves to thinking that's the only reason preventing release. Apply common sense and the "everything that can be used against Trump, will be used against Trump" rule*. Those files were in hands other than Trump's for a long time, and Trump's involvement with Epstein was not recent. If nothing was leaked yet to powerfully embarrass Trump, there's probably nothing there very embarrassing to Trump.
So that leaves other people, including a lot of people who have nothing to do with Trump but are nevertheless powerful and influential. Or there's just nothing at all.
*This applies to any potential scandal involving Trump. Absence of evidence - in his case - is usually evidence of absence. People don't sit on explosive information unless they're planning a strategically timed release, and it's really hard to keep explosive secrets in Washington.

I get your joke, but someone - municipalities and states - has to report their own data first. Understanding that is fundamental to understanding whether the inevitable "gotcha" posts mean anything at all.
