Trump administration 2024-2028

That's what they say for now ...
Oh yeah I'm sure that report is going to get memory holed and whoever wrote it will be fired for making the dear leader look bad. Also deep state Biden operatives lied about everything.

edit: on the other hand if they set up some kind of reward tip line i can tell them where a convicted felon and accused rapist lives. He's also trying to prevent the release of a list of pedophiles.

That is classic dictatorship move: seize the capital with military force.

I love how he had a board showing the murder rates in various world capitals (judiciously selected because they were low), but absolutely no other American city to offer a comparison. Everybody knows that the US is one of the world's countries with some of the highest homicide rates. The real question should be how does DC compare to other American cities of the same size. I would think it's pretty favourable in comparison.

Yeah THIS is going to go well.

edit: Trumps own DOJ says crime is down in DC. Violent crime at 30 year low

Also, if crime were such a problem in the area, then why did the feds cut funding for law enforcement there?

Trump’s own Federal Emergency Management Agency is cutting security funding for the National Capital Region, an area that includes D.C. and nearby cities in Maryland and Virginia. The region will receive US$20-million less this year from the federal urban security fund, amounting to a 44-per-cent year-on-year cut.

BBC, as usual, has a good live thread on it.

Trump is so utterly, profoundly dishonest in so much of what he says.

A president standing at a podium saying police “can do whatever the hell they want” is such an incredibly dangerous thing for a democracy. There WILL be violent excesses out of this stupid rhetoric he’s spouting.

For context, remember that DOJ has recently ended civil rights investigations and enforcement into various police departments in the U.S. that followed felony convictions of police officers in killings where there was excessive police force. Because DC has no state-level governance, the administration really is able to extend police pretty close to carte blanche to act without fear of prosecution or empowered oversight.

Quite right, Brihard. Police forces, like any large organization, has some Bozos in it. When freed from the restrictions of the rule of law, some will absolutely do stupid things just because they can get away with it.

It’s much like what we’re seeing with ICE. They have been pretty much freed of acting like a responsible law enforcement agency and are now one step above goon squad.

Unless there is a literal riot storming the Capitol building, in which case you delay deploying them and let people die first.

Congress has authority over DC's municipal government, not the executive. If Democrats try hard enough, I suspect they can peel off enough Republicans in the House and Senate to actually assert some Congressional authority. If they got to 51 in the Senate, I suspect a preference cascade would result (ie. politicians wanting to be on the "right" side of an issue already across the margin).

Yes, I’m sure a reach out to Congressional republicans to try to curb MAGA executive overreach will definitely work this time.

You are surprised that a measure intended to bring someone to the table is suspended while negotiations continue?
riiiight

Cracking Up Lol GIF

Start with Paul (noted civil libertarian), Murkowski (moderate), and Collins (moderate) in the Senate. That gets to 50.

Some (Senate and House members) undoubtedly would try to avoid taking a position. But if military personnel are even perceived to be involved in routine policing (as opposed to exceptional civil disturbances), anyone actively taking a position in support would run a risk of ending his political aspirations forever. That includes Vance and his assumed presidential ambitions if for some reason he had to cast a tie-breaking vote.

You haven’t been paying much attention, have you? Those guys have been folding like cheap suits for a while now.

One or two will be allowed to vote against if they don’t need the votes. And MAGA will go along with whatever Dear Leader says.
