Political impacts of Ukraine war

Explain to me why Italy is sitting at the table during this latest WH meeting?

Italy has really given sweet p*ss all to Ukraine over the course of the war.

Italy is there simply because it gives Trump softer, prettier, toned down version of Hungary sitting at the table.

Poland should be sitting at that table, that's who's really missing from this. Once again Poland, its interests and its efforts are being ignored by the West.
Italy's Meloni is viewed like Finland's Stubb, as a Trump whisperer - and can they can generally deflate his rather bizarre actions and reactions.

But even she gets nauseated at times.

#5 according to US News & World Reports …

I’d say there’s some merit to having someone who even critics say is far from woke at the table to balance things out, given Hungary’s other axes to grind with UKR keeping them away from the table.

THAT would have sent quite the message for sure.

I’m not that pessimistic yet - not to mention I suspect Poland would be MORE than happy take USSR 2.0 behind the woodshed if needed.

Macron and Merz being the loudest voices about an Article 5 type security guarantee, and the EU Commissioner pushing the fact that the abducted Ukrainian children needing to be returned.

What is interesting is that today before the meeting Germany's MoD also admitted to helping Ukraine with its long range "Flamingo" ground launched cruise missile. 3000km range, and a 1,350kg payload. Which puts Moscow, St Peterburg, and most of populated Russia under threat.

Also rumors abound about the EU and NATO leveraging POTUS on the state of our finances and how much US Debt that Europe owns.

Interesting comment from POTUS that US Military personnel may need to be positioned in Ukraine to ensure a Peacekeeping force - which was absolutely not on Putin's accepted list.

Credit where due, for sure, but I suspect FLOTUS47 is generally smarter than a LOT of the White House put together. They better hope she continues to stay onside.
She has played Trump for years, her interests are her son, then herself and she knows perfectly how to play the game. Likely has a huge amount of dirt on him, but as long as he gives her access to money and power, she is very willing to play the game to perfection. She understands her role very well. He needs her onside.

Meloni has actually been very strong on Ukraine, considering the alignment of her party. I dare say she’s been better than our own Trudeau, but that is a low bar…

Zelenskyy did however set a man on fire.

Niiiice - good on DEU!

Now if THAT happens, it would move my “POTUS47 Is A Russian Stooge” dial down a fair bit. Now, all he has to do is convince the more isolationist bits of his party that this would be a good idea. Thanks for that tidbit!

Trump took a 40 minute phone call with Putin, mid-discussion with Zelenskyy and the other leaders. A hot mic caught a bit of something he was talking to Macron about.

"I think he wants to make a deal. I think he wants to make a deal for me. You understand that? As crazy as that sounds," Trump tells Macron, appearing to refer to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sounds like Trump is still eagerly gobbling up bait Putin keeps laying out to delay things.

After the multilateral they moved into the Oval for further discussion, leaders only. No derailing opportunities for Vance.

BoJo’s not impressed.

It made the gorge rise to see Putin welcomed on to American soil.

It was emetic to see him applauded on the red carpet.

It was nauseating to watch his Gollum-like smirk as he became one of the only world leaders I can think of to be invited to ride in the back of the presidential limo.

It was positively chunderous to hear him given an American platform for his lies about the causes of the war in Ukraine – a country that in 2014, when he first attacked it, posed no threat whatever to Russia.

As I listened to the unctuous and wearisome predictability with which he tried both to flatter and discreetly humiliate Donald Trump, I wanted to gag. I bet you did, too – and most of us are not even Ukrainian.

Imagine how it felt to be one of those embattled heroes in a dug-out near Pokrovsk, fighting for your country’s freedom, and to hear the President of the United States – the ex officio team captain of the Free World – refer to Vladimir Putin as ‘the boss’.

Retch.

Think of the tens of thousands of Ukrainian widows and orphans. Think of the maimed and mutilated; think of the Ukrainian civilians living in daily and nightly terror of Putin’s bombs and missiles – still raining down, even though the so-called negotiations were taking place in Alaska.

Some people believe she should have worn pants if she did not want to be raped.
Some people apply the same thinking to nations.
It is abhorrent thinking either way.

Well there hasn't been a big blow up yet as of posting, it seems bringing a chunk of Europe with him this time has helped a good bit.

The frightening thing to me is that Trump, with his total lack of knowledge about European history, lack of knowledge about military or diplomatic history and his ego-driven type of negotiating tactic could end up placing the US and the West into a position now( such as US and/or other western troops in Ukraine to guarantee its security as part of a peace deal) that could cause a real problems, due to careless brinkmanship, 4,5,6 years down the road. The man is a loose-cannon with zero ethics or morals.

Well if it is any consolation (it shouldn't be) J.D. Vance is worse.

BUT realistically the ONLY way to ensure that there is a lasting peace is to put NATO troops into Ukraine, and some of those must be American. Only the fact that any invasion would see a devastating result to Russia with thwart Russia.
NATO put forces on the Wall in Germany to ensure the USSR knew that any issued would cause another World War.

While it may be brinkmanship, the Cold War caused the USSR to break up as the Russian people wanted Coca-Cola and Blue Jeans. Perhaps another one will have them wanting indoor plumbing outside of the major cities...
I mean hey, you got to be able to use all those stolen toilets somewhere.

The issue is due to POTUS's gnat like attention span, someone without Kremlin ties needs to be there reminding him who the good guys are in this. It took some heavy hitters from the free world to tug him back out of Putins under garments this week - what really needs to happen is a G7 meeting in Kyiv where POTUS can see the evil of Russia first hand.
Flood Ukrainian Airspace with F-22's and F-35's and announce a no fly zone over the Ukrainian International Borders for 1 week prior and after the meeting - have some B-2's around for presence sake as well. Put an American ADA Bde into Kyiv as well as Bde from the 82nd, then fly AF1 into Kyiv.

As Shoresy would say "setting the tone".

While I tend to agree the biggest difference now is that pretty well all the national leaders during the cold war had also had experience of the catastrophe of WW2 and the long road to recovery after it….many of those leaders actually spent time on the firing line. The same can’t be said of the present leaders…..and I think that is important. Personally I think the first step to a lasting peace in the present conflict is to stop the parsimonious dribble of equipment to Ukraine….let the US and Europe and Canada really become the arsenal of freedom and load the Ukrainians up with every piece of anti-air, anti-armour they need and want, every artillery shell and mlrs rocket they can use and fire….let them actually hammer the front-line Russian troops on the front-line and peace will fall into place.

So, no.

A toddler holding nuclear codes requires careful handling.

Trump does not have any particular skill himself (besides ruthless self interest. I will give him that).

Because you can't see clearly through the tainted lens of hate you view Trump through you are underestimating the guy that made the biggest political come-back in American history and survived two assassination attempts in the process. And now he is trying to end a war his way.

How is “surviving two assassination attempts” skill on his part?

He is, objectively, a terrible President, doing incalculable damage to the US (let alone the western alliance). That you cannot see that through the tainted lens of your “fanboy life” is equally shocking.

In no way do I under-estimate his ruthless self-interest and his willingness to say or do whatever it takes to seize and hold power.
