Continental Defence Corvette

Interesting to see most of the expected/desired capabilities of the CDC in the French FDI class:

Makes me dubious we'll be able to fit this into a 2500T/105m length hull...

Oh we won't. I guarantee that's ships gonna be about 3000-3500 tonnes and about 110m long. IF they pack what they want into it.

Would it be so outlandish to suggest dusting off the plans for the HALIFAX class and knocking out 8-9 new build versions?

Step 1: Find the hardware to read the tapes.

Step 2: Hope that the lack of proper preservation of the tapes won't be an insurmountable obstacle.
I recently found my cassette

Well, I just recently found my copy of Tears For Fears “Songs From A Big Chair” on cassette. Plays as sweet as it did in 86. I have a right to be optimistic…

Agreed, and even if they were willing to increase the size of the CDC to 4500t, they would have to buy the FDI as is, or come up with a new design from scratch. If they tried to take the FDI and Canadianize it, they "constellation" the whole project.

Considering the age of the design and ultimately what you'd need to adapt/change to even make it producible again, the end product isn't worthwhile at all. CPF was more than adequate in its day, perhaps even fairly good, but it's very inadequate for the present, let alone the future.

There is no strict tonnage limits I am aware of set for the CDC, Topshee did discuss length (less than 104m ideally, potentially longer) but it all depends on what they end up viewing as a worthwhile tradeoff. One of the goals of the CDC is to incorporate as much Canadian/non-US equipment as possible seemingly while remaining interoperable, alongside being a domestic Canadian design. FDI doesn't fit with this, even the Polar Class 6~ strengthening requirement would likely cause it significant issues even before you began to deal with the French.

Honestly the combat systems of the CDC write themselves. We have the nav system, CMS, deck cranes, sonar, antennas Sweden for radars and main gun. Norway for anti ship missiles.

Platform management is Canadian. Don't know about engines, generators or such but I'm sure there are options.

What we don't have is the creativity/experience in ship design or the breath of experience in alternative materials (like composites). We have ship designers that can adapt other designs, but clean sheet a warship with creative and applicable solutions (like the FDI above), thats probably beyond us right now.

"Constellation" it?

Please explain - non Navy guy here

They mean the boondoggle that the Constellation Class turned out to be.

On 25 November 2025, Secretary of the Navy John Phelan announced that all but the first two ships in the class had been canceled as part of a Navy review of its fleet strategy, with an emphasis on designs that can be constructed more rapidly.

Incidentally I played rugby with and for a John Phelan with the Kingston Panthers for decades. Not the same guy ;)

Constellation Class could easily be substituted with LCS or DDG1000 or Ford Class
