2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

Partly it's because Greenland is right under the flight path of a lot of what Russia would fling at the US in the event of nuclear war. I have no idea whether there's some belief that their existing facilities in Greenland aren't good enough. There are also claims that they have "concerns" about control of the adjacent waters. Golden Dome probably has nothing to do with it.
I don't see there being concerns with the waters on the west side of Greenland. I'm assuming that you're referring to the waters on the east side, between Greenland and Iceland. Because if there is a 'gap', its in those waters because obviously Iceland is unable to patrol those waters, the Irish on their western approaches and the UK is pressed to address/cover the waters from their shores straight through to Greenland.

To our luck/credit, having 8 AOPS available or just about available to cover waters in the Arctic removes some of the 'issues' that the US may have with us in those waters. The US clearly doesn't have anything along the lines of our AOPS available to them currently and would be hard pressed, outside of some nucs, to cover that area themselves. I think we'd be in even a worse situation than we currently are if we had none or even 2-3 AOPS available today. Having 5/6 now and very soon another 2 adds some volume/weight.

Pretty sure they can “control” those waters using existing naval and air assets and existing basing right. I don’t think the G-I-UK gap is a concept discovered by military strategists only when Trump came to office…

As dumb as it sounds I think he literally just thinks all of North America should be as star-spangled as possible. Like he’s looking at the world map in a game of Civilization or something.

If he has an actual articulable concern for North America’s security and Greenland is a factor, then explain what it is and leverage the existing alliance to address it. I’m sure another squadron of P8s could be hosted permanently or rotational in Iceland or, if appropriate facilities exist, Greenland.

Jesus Christ, all they have to do is ask the Danes nicely and they’ll probably let the Yanks put missile defence all over the bloody island!

Idjits! Every single one of them!

The Yanks asked nicely for help for decades. It was only when they elected an asshole that people took them seriously.

Except that’s not true WRT to Greenland.

Since the US started basing military assets in Greenland, Denmark has bent over backwards for the US. They ask for bases, Copenhagen says how many you want? The US wants to harvest resources, Copenhagen says help yourself. The US asks if they can base nukes there, Copenhagen says don’t tell us and we won’t know.

Denmark and Greenland have been very obliging to Washington’s asks since WWII. This drama is unnecessary and proves every lefty’s wet dream that the US is an imperialist power.

It is an imperialist power.

And I am no lefty.

The Yanks have been trying to convince people that they can't be imperialists because they are the good guys. Unlike the nasty Brits that they worked to replace.

They didn't fool their fellow security council members or the rest of the planet. They fooled themselves.

The difference between a bully and a saviour is the degree of benevolence and whether or not the target is you or the person bullying you.

....

Donald is not playing this as a case by case basis. He is being universally disruptive. HIs unfocused rage is hard for any country, specifically China and Russia, to use as a casus belli. He is not picking on anybody. He is picking on everybody. Friend and foe alike. He is shaking the dice and trusting that he can get a better deal.

A bunch of other governments: "He not only disavowed military action against a treaty ally; he stated it was an option. What does that mean for us?"
The key point, in my opinion, "What does that mean for us?" If they don't know then there is room for discussion. Uncertainty seems to be the common thread through all his actions.

I am thinking more along the lines of it being just about the cheapest way of kicking all foreign affairs problems down the road. No treaties or other deals to negotiate to forestall something or other; no military actions to slap hands. Just such a rhetorical sea of belligerent unpredictability that troublemakers decide, "Fuck it; we'll wait and see how things stand after their next election."

That too.

Another word from the Scots vernacular comes to my mind: Chancer.

I would argue that he is giving China and Russia everything they want on a silver platter. His actions are making them stronger, not weaker.

He ran (poorly, as the only person in the world who managed to bankrupt one) a casino: He should know better than anyone that in games of chance like dice, you consistently lose more than you win.

Making GHBTP government policy.

You know the best part of all this?

Any attack by Russia or China on Greenland would trigger article 5. So Denmark/Greenland is already protected.

Unless the USA has zero intention of honouring Article 5...

I mean, it's pretty clear the USA has no intention of honouring Article 5.

'Whether they like it or not': Trump gives ominous warning on possible occupation of Greenland

Donald Trump offered an ominous warning in his ongoing campaign to acquire Greenland. During his meeting with oil and gas executives today, the president said “we are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not”.

His justification? “If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor,” Trump said.

“So we’re going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way.”

Trump repeated his frequent refrain that he “saved” Nato, while insisting that he still supports the alliance.

“If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have a Nato right now,” the president said. “But we’re not going to allow Russia or China to occupy Greenland, and that’s what’s going to happen if we don’t.”
