Pipelines, energy and natural resources

If this pans out, could be really great. Very large and accessible Alumina deposit in Saskatchewan. At present Canada imports about $3b in feed material for aluminum production for year. Most of that goes to Aluminum smelters in Quebec due to the very low cost of electricity there due to hydro dams. This could potentially totally see a couple billion a year from smelters in Quebec going to Saskatchewan mines instead of overseas.

... not too many 'wholly' Canadian gigantic mining companies out there. They're as Canadian as Dofasco. BHP is big in our north too, and they're Australian...
We're still players:

  • Nutrien
  • Barrick
  • Aneco Eagle
  • Kinross
  • Teck

At least those other companies are actual mining and resource companies who have experience playing with jurisdictions and FNs. Private equity firms are in the business of stripping assets and selling debt to each other before the music stops.

Or to Kitimat.

They have a recently modernized smelter as well as their Haisla LNG project. It might be more advantageous to placate BC than Quebec these days.

PS - Most, if not all the Canadian aluminum trade seems to be owned by Aussie Rio Tinto of Melbourne.

Look forwards to seeing one of these floated into a northern community.

I hope they incorporated a district heating system and turn it into a combined heat and power plant.

This mob is looking at the heating part of the puzzle.

It’s straight commodity commerce; if the deposit works out and is developed, I expect they’d sell to whoever will buy. Maybe both BC and Quebec could be supplied. Quebec is 90% of Canada’s production so I expect they’d probably consume the bulk of the output anyway.

Except, federal approval to dig, might take 10-20 years. Carney wants to leave our resources in the ground. I certainly don't expect the liberals to sacrifice Quebec votes by letting another province go into competition with their aluminum industry.

Why Quebec? Kitimat was designed and built by ALCAN for aluminum and it is a lot closer to Tisdale and it has the electricity as well.

Where's the proof or an example of Carney saying that he wants to leave our resources in the ground? Please provide an example or two or three?

Here is the list of what's on the 1st and 2nd tranches of fast tracked programmes under Carney for speedy Federal approval.

Canada Nickel's Crawford Lake project in Ontario, Nouveau Monde Graphite's Matawinie Mine, Quebec, Northcliff Resources' Sisson Mine, N.B., McIlvenna Bay Copper Mine, Saskatchewan, Red Chris Copper-Gold expansion, B.C., Minago Nickel, Manitoba, and Strange Lake Torngat Metals, Quebec.

I see 2 Quebec locations in that list.

Go read his book, it's all right there. I'm not going to quote page and chapter. Do your own looking.

His list of priority projects are just that. A list. A wish list with little chance of seeing any physical activity. A list that has seen no shovels in the ground or permits issued. Just more of Carney's pie in the sky promises, designed to distract his detractors from his inability or intransigence to actually get something done. And to provide his deaf, dumb and blind supporters talking points, as long as they don't have to explain them.

Give me something, anything, that has moved from promises to action in this government. Something that the majority of Canadians will benefit from. Something done in the last year. How many companies and people have been tossed by the wayside, over the last 12 months, so Carney can pursue his utopian fantasy?

Not sure if this has been posted but here's another country lining up for our oil/nat gas.

India wants more crude exports from Canada's West Coast: Hodgson

Canada's path to becoming an energy superpower runs through India, Energy Minister says

“India has the largest refining industry in the world today, and they are actively taking Canadian crude off the Gulf Coast, because that’s where they can get it in meaningful amounts today,” Hodgson said

“They were very clear with me: they would love to be able to get it off our West Coast, which has significantly shorter shipping times, which means the the economics for them are much better,” he said. “They have interest in both a potential expansion of the (Trans Mountain pipeline system) or any potential other pipeline that might develop through the efforts of Alberta as a proponent.”

Hodgson noted Friday that India’s energy consumption is expected to more than double by 2040, making it a desirable long-term market for Canadian crude, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) products like propane and butane.

“Canada produces roughly five to six per cent of the world’s oil today. We are selling less than one per cent of our production to India, so there’s a there’s a real opportunity.”

The remarks come a day after Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she has ruled out Kitimat, B.C. as a potential terminus for the province’s proposed new oil pipeline. Smith called it “too complex” with “too many channels” for tankers to navigate, alluding to concerns raised by coastal First Nations groups.

Smith has said previously sending Alberta’s crude to the Port of Prince Rupert, on B.C.’s northwest coast, could be a safer option for a new pipeline.

I think that even if God himself offered you proof that Heaven existed you'd still be a doubting Thomas.

A case of a sighted person who cannot see.

What an absolute load of non committal shit. You don't know anything of the sort. I gave you the proof you wanted, right from Carney himself. And you still deny it and denigrate me at the same time with your bullshit.

Now I indulged your questions. You answer mine. If not, quit wasting my time.

Yeah, you’re very off track on this one. This would not be competition with Quebec. The article is clear on where this would fit in to the aluminum supply chain. Did you read it or just react to the comment I made when I posted it?

Lol, you ‘gave proof’ is something that was written a number of years in the past - well before the ground shifted. Carney, as any intelligent person does, shifted his opinion when confronted with overwhelming evidence as to why it would be a good idea and necessary to do so.
As a small child I ignored my parents reasoning as to why I should wear a helmet when riding my bicycle. As time went on and I was confronted with numerous examples on why wearing a helmet when biking makes sense, I started wearing one.
You are clearly unable or unwilling to look at things independently but only collectively.
I drank from the PC Kool-Aide jug with both hands at a young age. I have held positions within the PC Youth Party during my University years and have worked for party members during that time as well. I have worn PC party pins on my jacket while working at Chrysler’s old Plant 3 Assembly factory during university and willingly squared off against Union/NDP members.
But as I as exposed to the world, outside Windsor, outside Canada, I realized that not all cats are grey. I adapted, I expanded my beliefs and I realized that compétant people exist within all political parties and that blind loyalty and obedience to one party, one leader, one belief was a fools game.

Don't blow your own horn.
You just might miss the music.

And one more time. You know absolutely fuck all about me.

That's possible.

Another possibility is that he has reached a point where he can really give form to his ideas, that he knows it, and that he is playing his cards carefully without losing sight of the aim.

12 months will tell whether he is truly a liberal or whether he is truly concerned about his country. If there is significant progress in developing export facilities for western crude and by that I mean a plan in place and pipe ordered and shovels in the ground will prove the later. If there is an election called it will be the former.
