If this pans out, could be really great. Very large and accessible Alumina deposit in Saskatchewan. At present Canada imports about $3b in feed material for aluminum production for year. Most of that goes to Aluminum smelters in Quebec due to the very low cost of electricity there due to hydro dams. This could potentially totally see a couple billion a year from smelters in Quebec going to Saskatchewan mines instead of overseas.

... not too many 'wholly' Canadian gigantic mining companies out there. They're as Canadian as Dofasco. BHP is big in our north too, and they're Australian...
We're still players:

  • Nutrien
  • Barrick
  • Aneco Eagle
  • Kinross
  • Teck

At least those other companies are actual mining and resource companies who have experience playing with jurisdictions and FNs. Private equity firms are in the business of stripping assets and selling debt to each other before the music stops.

Or to Kitimat.

They have a recently modernized smelter as well as their Haisla LNG project. It might be more advantageous to placate BC than Quebec these days.

PS - Most, if not all the Canadian aluminum trade seems to be owned by Aussie Rio Tinto of Melbourne.
