Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some clarification regarding prior service and BMQ recognition.
Here’s my situation:
During my interview, the Captain mentioned that since it has been more than 5 years since my release, there is a possibility I may have to redo BMQ. However, he also said the PLAR will make the final determination and that he wasn’t fully up to date on all current recruiting policies.
I was under the impression that once OFP is achieved, BMQ is considered valid for life, unless there were specific circumstances.
My questions:
Thanks in advance for any insight.
I’m looking for some clarification regarding prior service and BMQ recognition.
Here’s my situation:
- PRes
- Completed BMQ in May 2015
- Reached OFP (Private Trained) in August 2015
- Released in January 2017
- Previously Armoured Soldier
- Re-applying now (2026) as a Materials Management Technician (PRes)
- FORCE test, medical, and interview completed

My questions:
- In practice, how often is BMQ required again after ~9 years out, when the member was OFP at release?
- Does the fact that I am changing trades (Armoured to MMT) affect BMQ recognition?
- Is it more common to receive a refresher / abbreviated course rather than full BMQ?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
