Prior Service (Reserves) - OFP in 2015 - Chances of redoing BMQ?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some clarification regarding prior service and BMQ recognition.

Here’s my situation:
  • PRes
  • Completed BMQ in May 2015
  • Reached OFP (Private Trained) in August 2015
  • Released in January 2017
  • Previously Armoured Soldier
  • Re-applying now (2026) as a Materials Management Technician (PRes)
  • FORCE test, medical, and interview completed

During my interview, the Captain mentioned that since it has been more than 5 years since my release, there is a possibility I may have to redo BMQ. However, he also said the PLAR will make the final determination and that he wasn’t fully up to date on all current recruiting policies.

I was under the impression that once OFP is achieved, BMQ is considered valid for life, unless there were specific circumstances.

My questions:
  1. In practice, how often is BMQ required again after ~9 years out, when the member was OFP at release?
  2. Does the fact that I am changing trades (Armoured to MMT) affect BMQ recognition?
  3. Is it more common to receive a refresher / abbreviated course rather than full BMQ?
I understand the PLAR will decide, I’m just trying to get a realistic idea from those who’ve seen similar cases.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I was out for 10 years. I did not have to redo anything but the unit was hurting for people and I had to have a few different interviews prior to re-enrollment. I dont know for certain but i suspect the CO pulled some strings. I was sworn back in at a lower rank and got my old rank back + backpay after doing a few tests with the unit.
