2026 New Governor General (split from Liberal gov't thread)

The Head of State position is most democracies, parliamentary and republican, is largely ceremonial. Some are elected, some are political appointments. Some are called President; some Prime Minister. Some combine HoS and HoG, such as the finely oiled machine to our south.

If we got rid of it, in all likelihood we would replace it with something similar.

To ape our southern neighbours we'd need to find an incontinent dementia riddled self aggrandizing grifter.

Is Kevin O'Leary available?

I know we like to crap on the US right now, and their president makes it easy, I grant you.

Lets also not snub our noses too hard, we are the country that elected Voldemort three times, and then elected the same group of MPs a fourth time, what's the definition of insanity again ? We like to gloss over that the US has provided some excellent leaders. Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt(s), JFK, Regan, Obama just to name a few.

Any ways back to our glorious new GG best of luck, I hope you're the last.

'Laurentian central casting'... nice one ;)

Arbour and Vice-Regal Appointments and Powers

The reaction to Arbour’s appointment has been mostly positive. Her background is certainly impressive. She has prosecuted war crimes, sat on the Supreme Court of Canada, been the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and led a significant inquiry into sexual misconduct and cultural change within the Canadian Armed Forces. Arbour is fluently bilingual and has the experience and gravitas to do the job.

There have been critics of her appointment as well. Arbour is straight out of Laurentian central casting. She’s a good person to be our head of state stand-in with a Quebec sovereignty referendum on the horizon (even Blanchet’s a fan), but that makes her a less compelling representative of the nation as Alberta prepares for a separation vote of its own. Having a Westerner in the office might have been better in that regard.

Its wise.

Carney is faced with two separatists movements, one lead by a organized political party and the other by Jeffrey rath.

I would have lost a lot of respect for him if he took the Alberta separatists seriously

Seen a lot of stuff online, negative. Seems she's not a big fan of men, white men, the military or guns. And any combination of those.

People can change I suppose.

In order for her to be "the last", we would have to blow up our entire system. It is apparent that you are a fan of that, but I'm not sure the country would survive - medicine being worse than the disease.

It seems some on here would be okay with that outcome too.

OK. One last time: The position of GG is as representative of the King in Canada. As such the position is part of "The Crown in Right of Canada". The only way to touch the Crown in Right of Canada in any of its form is through a constitutional amendment requiring the assent of every single provincial legislature plus the Federal Parliament (both houses), and though it's not written in the constitution, i am almost willing to bet that the Supreme Court would find a way to claim that it requires First Nations consent too.

So lets be serious: the Canadian monarchy is not going away in anyone currently living's lifetime.

Its interesting in as a intellectual thought excercise, but of little use beyond that.

As long as we have it, I would prefer it go a decent Canadian, and that seems to be the case here.

As for constitutional reform, we now have two provinces that are lead by people who would rather see confederation burn than to give up their sacred cows, and I'm not sure I wouldn't add Doug Ford or Eby to that list.

The constitution works well enough as is, and is infinitely better than blowing up the country just trying to get 106 people off the payroll.

Regardless of how it's worded, this properly should have disqualified her from the office.
It also sounds like she has never spent any time around the military if that is what she thinks of the CAF.

It will be interesting to see if she strays from her officially 'neutral' position and starts to dabble in policy.

No world famous, precedent setting, Laurentian Elite immersed judge could be tempted to do anything like that, would they? ;)

Eventually it will reach a tipping point.

Apart from that time she spent looking into how the CAF handled sexual misconduct cases about 4 years ago?

God I hope she does :devilish:
