It seems they did, yes, but the situation is also getting seized on and exploited by some pretty shitty people without an ounce of good faith. This is getting astroturfed pretty hard and being used for publicity by the racist ‘remigration’ crowd.

From the small bits I’ve read, police on scene screwed up by not taking the claim of injury seriously and immediately assessing it, and by not separating the parties. But botched police response isn’t what’s driving the narrative now; it’s been hijacked by ‘brown kid stabbed and killed white kid’, and folded into existing racial tensions in the UK. Many of those at the protest were not local and came in from out of town to stir up shit.
