6 Jan 2020 U.S. Events (Split from A Deeply Fractured US)

Prosecutors play a role in deciding what to charge (and whether to over-charge, which is common in the US in order to produce plea bargains), and in asking for sentences.
As they do here as well, but convictions and actual sentences are the realm of the courts. Were they part of the over-reach?

Not innocent. All kinds of rioters walk home from riots without being taken into custody, though, let alone charged.
Often more of a capacity issue and targetting the ones seen as ringleaders or who have committed the most egregious offences. That and it's easier to catch the slower ones ;) Rioters walking home doesn't necessarily make them less culpable, and doesn't make the ones who were caught anymore more culpable, or any more deserving of a public handout for their troubles simply by virtue of the fact that they happened to get caught.

Much easier to take their photos, source their home addresses, then simultaneously lift them all in the dark at 3.00 am (in front of their screaming and wailing families) out of the glare of the media's cameras.

Follow me for more rioter's fun spoiling ideas ;)

I would not paint America through the years with the Trump 47 brush though.
Answering in another thread, because this isn’t about Iran. Trump 45 happened and then it ended in attempted autogolpe. The world was told that could never happen again. … and the Trump 47 happened, and it has been worse. And American voters didn’t turn sour when he started burning norms & turning on allies … they only soured when their wealth became impacted. Congress has been impotent. And everyone involved in the autogolpe has been forgiven.

The global commons doesn’t like to be fooled twice. You can’t play Jekyll and Hyde while expecting the world to forget the monster during the periods when the doctor is showing his face. So the whole world is going to paint the US with a Trump 47 brush. That will persist until the US undertakes systematic change & democratic reforms that demonstrably ensure there will never be a MAGA 3.0.

Or they come to the aide of the world in WW3.

Who told us (you) that ? And why would us (you) believe such nonsense ?

Colonel Campbell put it this way,

The people who voted for Trump and will vote for him or his surrogate again, in 2020 and in 2024 and beyond, don't care about the data because it doesn't address their issues, their feelings.

The moderating staff thanks you for having the situational awareness to bring the conversation here instead of the many others than cant help themselves by derailing other threads with politics.

Impossible to believe or disbelieve a proposition unless it is well-enough defined. What was it that could never happen again? A free and fair election in which voters repudiate long-established factions? Political protests in which protestors occupy government buildings and interfere with legitimate operations of government?

As long as the Democrats are determined to work so hard to avoid serving the interests of the median US voter and Republicans are divided into those who are habitual and ineffectual cheek-turners and those who are bellicose and give effect to the "80" side of "80/20" issues, US politics will remain unsettled at current levels.

Everyone else can go on pretending "it can't happen here" and fiddling while their own median voters burn.

Nobody should have believed that the system that brought Trump 45 to power was somehow immune from doing the same or similar again, but there were plenty ready to declare the era of Trump as in the past. And seemingly this narrative was accepted. The US failed to hold Trump accountable. Global democracies failed to prepare for a world where he could return … they assumed away the possibility or maybe were trying to be polite. It doesn’t matter either way. This go round has been so much worse. The nativity and politeness are gone. If America doesn’t want the world to view it as a MAGAtocracy, it will take more than the other side finishing on top in the next coin toss.

Things are going to be so awkward for the next Democrat president.

He or she will be trying to do things, sign accords, make deals, and the global community will politely smile and nod but put zero weight in it because everyone and their mother knows the next
maga president will defecate all over it.

Yet many many people all over the world, including Canadians, continue to seek a life in the USA.

WASHINGTON — A record number of younger American women now say they want to leave the United States — and their most common destination of choice is Canada.

Those findings come from a new Gallup poll that says 40 per cent of American women aged 15 to 44 report they would permanently leave the United States given the opportunity.

Gender Gap:

That’s substantially more than the 19 per cent of younger men who told the pollster they want to leave the United States for good. Gallup said the 21-point gap between the genders is the largest it has ever recorded.

Yes, this understood,

Actual migration requires overcoming strict immigration rules, navigating employment and salary changes in a new country, and dealing with complex tax processes.

Not sure if the current administration has endeared themselves much to young women since last year.

If that were really the case Canada should have no problem attracting all kinds of young professionals like doctors, nurses, etc. Given the population size difference, there should be lineups of skilled Americans trying to get into to Canada...

But the flow is the other way around, Canada is bleeding skilled people to the US.

Looks like young men are pretty satisfied,
