Trump administration 2024-2028

Americans (the ones inhabiting the chunk of land between the Rio Grande and 49 degrees north/Great Lakes) have been drinking their own bathwater for 250 years. Beacon of democracy my ass, its been a haven for grifters, tyrants, and assholes since the Puritans stepped on Plymouth Rock.

And right from the start, they were masters at self aggrandizement and over the top self promotion (like a certain current president): They make such hullabaloo of said Plymouth rock. Have you ever seen it! It's just another dinky little flat stone amongst tons of similar ones everywhere on that coast. If it hadn't been marked somehow, no one would be able to figure out which one it was.

There's that anti-Americanism we know and love!

Watching from the attic, it just gets a little annoying.

The Line had a good saying about the USA.
"You could of had all of Canada if you weren't such dicks!"

Canadians are pretty good at being dicks ourselves.

Toward our own. Not to our friends and neighbours.

We are very good at being outwardly sanctimonious and preachy without an actions to back us up. Not to mention our often over inflation our importance and impact in the world.

We're dicks too, we just don't like to admit it.

The difference is that very few people in the world listen to us when we get preachy (which I admit is a feature of the central Canada chattering class) . The USA on the other hand have been screwing up the world royally since WWII, while at the same time preaching to the world that they're the perfect democracy.

Vietnam and the Persian Gulf Region are number one examples. The Yanks figured they'd be able to right the wrongs of the French and British Colonials and in the end their hubris embroiled their young men and women in Indo China and now Iran.

No, let me correct myself, the Ivy League Grads embroiled the sons and daughters of trade school grads in these adventures. Heaven forbid their own children would be sacrificed.

And I doubt that the Canadian grads of UofT and McGill would be any better if they were in that position.

Do you think the CIA (with the help of MI6 and the French) led coups of the 50's made anything better today?

No idea.

But , recent headlines like this catch my eye ,

WASHINGTON — A record number of younger American women now say they want to leave the United States — and their most common destination of choice is Canada.

Fast track american women!

I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the States
Back to the cutest girls in the world

Sun-kissed skin so hot, they'll melt your popsicle

A pillar of the American system is that government is instituted to protect the rights of people to conduct their lives as they see fit. Not everyone is going to see fit to be an exemplar of beneficial human endeavour.

The USA is almost absurdly democratic. Elected executive and vice; elected bicameral legislature. Same model in almost every state, where most (all?) also have elected AGs. Some with elected judges. Elections for county officers. Elections for mayors and councils and municipal officers. All free; compulsion is approximately non-existent. All essentially fair as far as anyone can tell, although some jurisdictions seem determined to have few safeguards. In Canada, I cast one vote in a federal election and one vote in a provincial election and a handful of votes in a municipal election, only for mayor and council members. Which is more democratic? If the US isn't democratic, what is Canada?

The Yanks were pursuing the same thing they were after when they supported the Nationalist Chinese (Chiang) and South Korea (Rhee) - halting the spread of Russian and Communist Chinese expansion. A significant difference between Vietnam and earlier times was the change in composition of the UN. What was possible not long after VJ Day was no longer possible by the 1960s.

The US was mostly successful. Russia wasn't able to easily steamroll much more than it grabbed at the end of WW II, and cultural and economic factors have rolled much of it back.

I gather there's a widespread belief the US emerged from WW II as some behemoth military power that started flexing its muscle all over. Not true. The US drew down (demobilized, mothballed, wrote off, etc) rapidly and heavily. When Stalin started flexing in east Asia, the worry among the senior partners of the early UN was that everyone was very weak and (Europe showing its stripes early) that the US needed to be stronger. Stalin flexed, the US responded (just in time), and here we are.
