And Snith continues to add fuel to the fire, the government quietly this past week eliminated all 300+ public health inspectors in the province.

Instead of becoming direct government employees this summer as planned, Alberta’s public health inspectors will instead transfer to another agency, Premier Danielle Smith says.

On her call-in radio show on Saturday, Smith walked back the decision to move health inspectors from Alberta Health Services to be direct government employees — instead moving them to be under the purview of Primary Care Alberta.

Smith said this way, inspectors keep compensation and benefits packages untouched amid health-care restructuring.

The provincial government has backed off plans for public health inspectors with Alberta Health Services to work directly for the government.

Earlier this month, public health workers, who were members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) and recently negotiated a new contract, called out the government’s plan that would have forced them to switch unions and become members of Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).

On Saturday, during her Your Province, Your Premier radio show, Premier Danielle Smith said government has decided that workers would instead be under the control of Primary Care so workers can remain with the AUPE to reduce disruption to workers.

Yes but what concerns me is by her own admission she didn't know the damage this was causing till someone told her by calling into her radio show. This tells me either A this wasn't studied, or B her 4 different health ministers aren't keeping her informed about whats going on. Either way it is concerning.

The top dog might not always know the intimate details from the ground. Context does not always make it to the top.

What is important to recognize here is that once she was made aware of context, she wasn't afraid to change the decision. That's the kind of leader I can get behind.

Would you rather have someone resistant to adjusting to new (to them) information because they will be labelled as flip flopping?

If i had a decision causing public backlash, id be asking for a briefing from the minister about it so I could explain it to the public when challenged at press conferences. The buck cant stop with the PM on federal issues but not stop with the Premiere on provincial ones.

Its great the change was reverted, but the fact it needed to shows a lack of communication within the GoA

If i had a decision causing public backlash, id be asking for a briefing from the minister about it so I could explain it to the public when challenged at press conferences. The buck cant stop with the PM on federal issues but not stop with the Premiere on provincial ones.

People treat provincial governments with kid gloves and the federal government as a punching bag.

I'll give her credit for changing direction rather than digging in like a tic like some politicians do. Although I don't like him, that one thing in Ontario's Doug Ford's favour. The fact that it was a bad decision that only got addressed when the government was called out on it suggests a couple of possibilities; it was an ideological decision made against the evidence, or her Cabinet and/or bureaucracy aren't speaking truth to power, for whatever reason.

I'll give her credit for changing direction rather than digging in like a tic like some politicians do. Although I don't like him, that one thing in Ontario's Doug Ford's favour. The fact that it was a bad decision that only got addressed when the government was called out on it suggests a couple of possibilities; it was an ideological decision made against the evidence, or her Cabinet and/or bureaucracy aren't speaking truth to power, for whatever reason.

OR... the bureaucrats who are shuffling the deck made a mistake ... it got the Premier's attention and she reversed the decision. I know - impossible!

I'm talking about bureaucrats managing structure changes in government organizations - a problem surfaces - premier steps in and corrects it....
