Sick Leave

Saw this in Politics,

A healthy sick leave bank is one of those amazing safety nets you don’t realize the value of til you need it.

Do your 35 years, full-time "It's a career, not a hobby" , retire with your first employer, take take your nine month Gratuity, and GTFO on an OMERS pension.

162 sick days are deducted for the Gratuity.

You can burn off the remaining 468 sick days, or donate them back to Metro when you retire.

That's for you to decide.

For Long Term Disability , they used your Sick Bank and vacation, Floating Stat Holidays ( FSH ) and lieu days for six months.

Then they put you on LTD.

LTD pays 75%. Your Sick Bank tops it up to 100%

YMMV

With one particular employer, yes. Sick leave / LTD arrangements very heavily by employer.

Didn't see an appropriate Germany thread, so here it goes.

Looks like they are getting pretty strict about calling in sick.

Germany looks to ban calling in sick, would require doctors’ notes immediately

In an effort to reduce days lost through sick leave, workers would not be able to call in sick by telephone

We always called in sick. No questions asked. They'd just deduct days from your Sick Bank. Call us when your ready to come back.

Germany’s primary medical care system must be in great shape then. This would add considerable burden. Plus if someone wakes up shitting incessantly, sitting in a waiting room for three hours may not promote speedy recovery versus lying in bed chuggin Gatorade.

In my organization, anything less than 40
Hours sick, you just call in. Management can request a note, but it’s rare and would need to be justified. Once you hit 40 hours you need a note, and that makes our disability management system crack an eye open and watch.

Different employers have different plans.

We had a cumulative leave sick bank. You cashed out your gratiuity on retirement.

They took that away for members hired after 2009 .

Bankable sick leave was negotiated by the City of Toronto shortly after the war.

Over the decades, it grew into a large Unfunded Liability.

Members hired any year prior to 2009 have the option to transfer out of it.

From what we were told at our pensioner luncheons, not a single one

It's not so much that Germany's primary medical care system is in great shape, but that federally mandated, employer paid sick leave benefits for all employees (who participate in the statutory public health insurance scheme) are exceedingly generous compared to any jurisdiction on this side of the Atlantic.

In Germany, employees reporting sick are entitled to receive continued full pay from their employer. That entitlement generally is limited to six weeks per year. Afterwards, the health insurance institutions pay sickness benefit.

Canadian employees, on the other hand, unless they are covered by a collective agreement or are in one of the rare provinces that mandate a few days of "paid" sick leave, are usually left to fend for themselves.

British Columbia

After 90 days of employment, employees are entitled to up to 5 paid sick days and 3 unpaid days.

Alberta

Called personal and family responsibility leave.
After 90 days of employment, employees are entitled to 5 days of unpaid leave for health issues or family needs.

Saskatchewan

After 13 consecutive weeks of employment, employees are entitled to unpaid, job-protected sick leave:
  • Up to 12 days per year for non-serious illnesses
  • Up to 12 weeks per year for serious illnesses or injuries
  • Up to 26 weeks per year for injuries covered by workers' compensation

Manitoba

Known as Family Leave.
After 30 days of employment, employees are entitled to 3 unpaid days per year of Family Leave.

Ontario

After 2 consecutive weeks of employment, an employee is entitled to up to 3 days of unpaid sick leave per year.

Quebec

After 3 months of employment, an employee is entitled to 2 days of paid sick leave per calendar year.

New Brunswick

After 90 days of employment, an employee is entitled to up to 5 days of unpaid sick leave during a 12-month period.

Prince Edward Island

  • After 30 days of employment an employee is entitled to 4 days of unpaid sick leave.
  • After 1 year of employment an employee is entitled to 1 paid day of sick leave, plus 4 unpaid days of leave.
  • After 2 years of employment an employee is entitled to 2 paid days of sick leave, plus 4 unpaid days.
  • After 3 years of employment an employee is entitled to 3 paid days of sick leave, plus 4 unpaid days.
  • If a leave is for 5 or more consecutive days, the employer may request proof from a medical practitioner that the leave was required

Nova Scotia

An employee is entitled to up to 5 days of unpaid leave per year if the leave is due to the employee’s illness/injury.
An employee is entitled to up to 3 days of unpaid leave per year, if the leave is due to the illness/injury of a family member, or for medical/dental appointments.

Newfoundland and Labrador

After 30 days of employment, an employee is entitled to 7 unpaid days of sick or family responsibility leave per year.
An employee is not required to provide medical documentation for sick leave; however, an employer can request it.
If taking family responsibility leave of 3 consecutive days or more, the employee must provide a written statement indicating the nature of the family responsibility.

A sick bank you can cash out at retirement just incentivizes people to come to work sick.

Not really. The retirement gratuity hardly puts a dent in your in your sick bank.

You get 18 paid sick days a year .I made sure to burn off every last one of them before I retired.

There were also FSH, Lieu-time etc. Paid Leave for this and that.

Nobody had to work sick.

Also, now, they have all sorts of time off for Stress.

If you have a non-WSIB related illness or injury, you go on Long Term Disability ( LTD ).

The taxpayers were happy when the Sick Bank was negotiated after the war, because it cost them nothing.

But, as the decades passed, the chickens came home to roost - so to speak. It became an Unfunded Liability.

When people would say, 'I don't have a Sick Bank, so why should you?!"

I would think to myself, maybe the question they should ask themselves is, "They have it, why don't I?"

It's not a race to the bottom.
