Sick Leave

Saw this in Politics,

A healthy sick leave bank is one of those amazing safety nets you don’t realize the value of til you need it.

Do your 35 years, full-time "It's a career, not a hobby" , retire with your first employer, take take your nine month Gratuity, and GTFO on an OMERS pension.

162 sick days are deducted for the Gratuity.

You can burn off the remaining 468 sick days, or donate them back to Metro when you retire.

That's for you to decide.

For Long Term Disability , they used your Sick Bank and vacation, Floating Stat Holidays ( FSH ) and lieu days for six months.

Then they put you on LTD.

LTD pays 75%. Your Sick Bank tops it up to 100%

YMMV

With one particular employer, yes. Sick leave / LTD arrangements very heavily by employer.

Didn't see an appropriate Germany thread, so here it goes.

Looks like they are getting pretty strict about calling in sick.

Germany looks to ban calling in sick, would require doctors’ notes immediately

In an effort to reduce days lost through sick leave, workers would not be able to call in sick by telephone

We always called in sick. No questions asked. They'd just deduct days from your Sick Bank. Call us when your ready to come back.

Germany’s primary medical care system must be in great shape then. This would add considerable burden. Plus if someone wakes up shitting incessantly, sitting in a waiting room for three hours may not promote speedy recovery versus lying in bed chuggin Gatorade.

In my organization, anything less than 40
Hours sick, you just call in. Management can request a note, but it’s rare and would need to be justified. Once you hit 40 hours you need a note, and that makes our disability management system crack an eye open and watch.

Different employers have different plans.

We had a cumulative leave sick bank. You cashed out your gratiuity on retirement.

They took that away for members hired after 2009 .

A sick bank you can cash out at retirement just incentivizes people to come to work sick.

Members ,still on the job , who were hired any year prior to 2009 had the option to transfer out of the sick bank .

From what we were told at our pensioner luncheons, not a single one did.
