CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

They don't, but it can inflame tensions between the feds and the provinces at a time when we need a more united approach.
Feds give the provinces a 100% transfer of the value of the excise tax they charge US importers on the exports South…literally more money that they were making before. Let’s see how much the provinces don’t like that. In the case of petroleum from Alberta, it will actually serve to remediate the discount that the U.S. has forced Alberta’s WCS to be sold at, as well as provide Alberta more revenue than they had with the systemic reduction of oil royalties starting back with Ralph Klein and carrying through to current times.

So the million dollar question is what does he have in mind then?

He's already ruled out any further concessions on Canada's part, so does he mean retaliation? A bribe? Waiting the admin out?

Because 2 out of those 3 have been tried or currently being played out.

Is Poilievre just playing politics or has he genuinely not come to terms with the fact that the US isn't negotiating in good faith, nor really trustworthy that they'll stick by any deal we might make.

Poilievre knows those things but he also knows he has a close to zero chance of ever having to be in the hot seat across from Trump. That affords him that beautiful privilege the opposition sometimes has of knowing they can say just about anything and will not have to actually show receipts.

He could walk downtown in Shawinigan and dump a extra-grand poutine from Chez Potato King right in the middle of rue Notre Dame, and the constituents of Battle River - Crowfoot would still vote for him…

Trump never was negotiating in good faith, yet the LPC and PMMC formed government on getting a deal. A good deal. And making life more affordable.

Should the opposition not work to hold the Gov to the very things that got it elected ?

Lets be clear - by March-April 2025 was there a track record yet established by Trump that he had zero intention of honouring any of the trade deals that he had agreed upon. In fact, please site which trade deals did he sign prior to our election?

For anyone.
No one, no country, leader saw that Trump 2.0 would be 180 degrees different than Trump 1.0 last winter/spring of 2025. He's totally unhinged now. The curtain has been pulled back to revel his true colours, there is no negotiating in good faith with him.

Have you read what he just said about Oman today? 'I'll bomb the shit out of them' if they 'get in the way' of a Hormuz deal with Iran. The guy is now openly threatening one of his own Gulf allies? How unhinged is that?

Trump threatens to bomb Oman over Iran deal

US president says he will ‘bomb the s---’ out of US ally if it ‘gets in the way’ of Hormuz negotiations

You're losing me. What does this have to do with what I posted ?

I was attempting to say that back under Trump 1.0 it was possible, though difficult, to negotiate in good faith with Trump. Case in point was the hammering out of CUSMA, difficult, but in the end it got done. It was reasonable to expect that Trump 2.0 would be the same. Over the first 6 months of Trump 2.0 it became apparent, to those able to objectively view it, that Trump 2.0 was going to be different and that there was no negotiating in good faith with him. That he could, and would, change, amend, rip up previously agreed upon deals with him at his pleasure.

Politicians need to be graded on the situations they are in, not the promises made before they were faced with the situation they are in.

If GWB said no more wars, but then got hit with 911, would we judge him saying he broke his promise?

If Steven Harper said only balanced budgets but gets hit with the global financial crisis, do we judge him for running deficits?

And can Carney, before it was known Trump had zero intention of ever signing a fair trade deal with anyone, be judged on his promise to get a fair deal?

Situations change from the campaign to governing, and all Pierre poilievre is doing is proving once again how he isn't right for this moment.

I think most Canadians can see how everyone outside of Russia, China, Argentina and North Korea are getting screwed by Trump, but somehow Poilievre is trying to convince us that he would ask Trump nicely for a no tariff deal and he would get it, like somehow carney is especially bad at making deals.

Pierre poilievre, the man unable to convince his own members of parliament to stick with his party would somehow get Trump to cave? The man unable to convince the constituents of Carleton to reelect him would convince Trump to give Canada zero tariffs?

It sounds stupid because it is stupid but somehow he is unaware of how stupid it sounds.

T
here is as much a chance of Canada getting 0% tariffs - as an independent country - as there is a Pope within the next 100yrs declaring that Priests can marry and that women can become Priests.
