Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Really curious now with how this is being hyped both domestically and abroad.

Doesn't seem to be EU membership, or joining under the EUCU.

EU membership would be unpalatable to Canadian voters, so some new special status makes the most sense to deepen ties.

Canadians don't want Brussels ordering them around any more than they want Washington to.

Which is why I'm thinking it might be something closer to the EUCU, but even then that doesn't quite fit as there are 2 non-EU members in the EUCU and this is supposedly "unlike anything that currently exists".

It could simply be that we are in North America... people like to spin things to be bigger than they are all the time, or so my wife says...

Doesn't seem to be EU membership, but perhaps something similar to joining the EUCU.

You thinking Carney, who proudly calls himself European, is sabotaging negotiations with the US to bring us closer to the EU?

3.4% is totally normal GDP growth! Probably even bigger than average!

Yeah, no way it’s the sort of joining that would subject us to EU regulation. That would be counterproductive and economically stifling. I could definitely see more open trade between us and them though. They have to see us as an attractive source of safe energy and critical minerals.

No way. He’s a capitalist first and foremost; all else equal he’d love a resumption of more free trade with the U.S. but he’s also a pragmatist and a former investment banker at a very high level, so he knows how to diversify and hedge.

I think you're right about him being pragmatic and understanding diversification and hedging.

That’s why I find his own portfolio interesting. IIRC , over 90% of his publicly disclosed stock holdings were American. His personal investment strategy seems to put a pretty strong emphasis on the US even while his government is trying to diversify Canada’s economic exposure away from it.

If he’s pragmatic, which he is, he’s going to put his investments where he was able to make the most money in the past.
Buying a S&P 500 and NASDAQ ETF fund over the last 20yrs definitely made you the most money for the easiet, least amount of effort.

Sounds like a lot of motive to see the US economy doing good 👀

Zelenskyy is in town tomorrow.

And...

10:30 a.m. The Prime Minister will participate in a signing ceremony with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Was American, decisions made before 47 took power. Now it being in a blind trust it can be composed of anything. Plus even if he was able to trade now, who is to say investing American is how he would go.

Do you think we shouldn’t be trying to diversify Canada’s trade considering America seems to be determined to economically harm us and force us to capitulate to a horrible deal?

Yes, absolutely. One of the few glimmers of light down south recently has been their belated effort to stop slave labour goods from accessing their market. We should take the same approach when negotiating access duties. If the other country doesn't have equivalent labour laws, protections, regulatory burdens, etc. we should mark up the duty appropriately. The EU is a peer in these regards and integration would be a net positive for both of us.

In hindsight and a little bit of education I see how smart his portfolio choices were. I don't see why he would want anything changed.

As for the blind trust I doubt instructions weren't left for who ever is running it, and I doubt they're going to just go full send on selling off huge chunks.

What did I say gave you the impression I think we shouldn't diversify Canada's trade?

The millions of illegals working in their country is a form of 'slave labour'..... What rights do they have? Who ensures that their rights aren't being trampled and abused?

Why is no one in Trump admin fining, arresting and seizing control of the all the US companies - large and small - that seek out and actively hire and retain these illegals working in the US? I've said it many many times on here. If the US was serious about vastly reducing its illegal immigrants problem they should be going after those that employ them and give them the belief that they have a shot at the American dream. Remove the employment opportunities and you'll remove the vast majority of the illegal immigrants. Keep giving them jobs and the problem will always exist.

The US loves slave labour. It is a large part of the reason they have the illegal immigrant problem they have.

I agree on holding other countries to the same standards, been arguing it for years. It is only fair in a free market. If I can’t legally make that product in Canada the same way with our laws (be it environmental, labour wise, etc.), it shouldn’t be allowed to be sold here or it should be fined/tariffed to be a equivalent cost as doing it in Canada.

The comment about his portfolio containing American stocks and attempting to diversify Canada’s trade. Seems like a attempt to call him a hypocrite for doing what is obviously best for Canada.

Oh, yeah I've said that before during the election when the LPC was doing their invest in Canada thing.

On a personal level yeah it makes sense, I've started doing the same.

Trade wise I've said from the start Canada needs to diversify away from the US more. Trumps did us a few favours, showing us how precarious of a position we're in is one of them.
