CH-148 Cyclone Progress

Ok, fair enough, but how much complexity do you want to introduce to this thread? The MND is primarily, functionally where the buck stops for military aviation in Canada, including contracted air services. I recognize it is more nuanced than that, but it answers the basic question of why “C” registrations on the A jets.
Well, we could get into TAOs and SPFPs and all that fun stuff, which can also be done with Ns, Gs, Fs and a few others… 🤓

Problem with a Cyclone takeoff at HMCS Discovery in Stanley Park? Video title is today's date.

Some quick flying decisions there and good that they were able to recover hopefully without injury.

Observation:

"Constant upgrades to aircraft and sensors, and a best-in-class sustainment program are key to the MH-60R aircraft’s unparalleled mission capability, mission availability and flight readiness.

  • Lockheed Martin’s Performance Based Logistics program for U.S. Navy MH-60R helicopters enables 95 percent flight readiness and availability — a rate unmatched by other maritime helicopters.
  • The U.S. Navy’s MH-60R roadmap will maintain the Romeo’s operational edge to 2045 and beyond."

Manufacturer claim....

Tinfoil hat moment, could Lockmart being quietly sabotaging support for the Cyclones in order to sell us more of their preferred model?

But it looks great ;)

Military investigating after two troubled helicopter fleets briefly grounded

Issues with Chinook and Cyclone helicopters are under investigation by the Royal Canadian Air Force's Directorate of Flight Safety

Canada’s military is investigating problems with two different fleets of helicopters, including one that is the same type that crashed this week during an Italian training mission in Bosnia, killing four.

National Defence didn’t respond immediately Friday to a query about whether it had placed limitations on its fleet of 14 Chinook helicopters in the wake of Italy’s tragic crash Thursday that also left 11 injured.

Meanwhile, Canada’s military temporarily suspended flying operations for its fleet of 26 CH-148 Cyclone ship-borne maritime helicopters this week after one of them lost power during takeoff on Oct. 26.

“The Cyclone in question was taking off from the helipad at HMCS Discovery, which is a Royal Canadian Navy reserve unit in Vancouver, when it experienced the power loss, and that’s where it landed,” said David Lavallee, who speaks for 1 Canadian Air Division, the operational-level command and control headquarters of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

“The aircraft landed safely, with no injuries.”

Impressive! Can congress fire Trump so that we can get on with this replacement. It would probably save lives and buckets of money.
Wonder what mission readiness rate is and how does the Cyclone and Cormorant compare. I’m guessing that it doesn’t come close.
