Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

I'll buy that. Before COVID there were not a lot of situations that endorsed working from home; although there were definitely some. The rules didn't change but working from home was one of few options available if a business wanted to stay in business. COVID ended, companies that had found that productivity was still satisfactory have stayed with the home concept along with the attendant savings in real estate. Some have told their staff to return to the office. Their prerogative. People who went out and bought houses 80 miles outside of the office based on the assumption that staying home would be permanent should have got it in writing. The difficulty with the feds is I believe simply that one size doesn't fit all. There are departments where working from remote locations works great but if they write in exceptions unions will take it to court and win. So better to call everyone back and perhaps get rid of a few employees at the same time. But establishing the principles at contract time is a good solution.
There is a lot of metrics more than simply ‘work done’ by a employee which is missed from a work from home situation.

Many of your top employees assist the weaker employees which results in so much more work done than just having a top performer working from home. A 5 minute conversation with a good worker can save hours of unproductive struggle in a poor one.

It also helps with training, its one thing taking a trained workforce remote. It is another all together to train someone who doesn’t know the job on how to do it remotely.

The jobs it works really well for are ones which are more ‘standardized’ across work sites (things like IT or accounting) where you work means less than you being trained.

Jobs it doesn’t work as well for is the ‘specialized’ to your worksite jobs, for example specific bureaucratic jobs (such as many government jobs where you aren’t bringing a skill set with you and practicing it, rather being trained on how insert departments process works and you being trained in it).

They also did a lot of studies during covid on productivity from working from home. The result was a drop in most fields. You can thank those lazy coworkers who ruined it for everyone.

Carney’s Senate Appointment Changes May Create More Political Risk Than Reward

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first Senate appointments have reopened a debate that had largely faded from public view over the past decade: how much political experience is too much political experience for someone appointed to Canada’s upper chamber?

On July 7, the Prime Minister announced four new senators: Conservative MP Richard Martel, cancer researcher Dr. Rodney Ouellette, chartered professional accountant Geeta Tucker, and Carney’s principal secretary, Tom Pitfield.

The appointments came with a significant change to the selection process. The government retained the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments and its open application process, but removed the non-partisanship criterion that had been in place since the board was created in 2016. The government also expanded the criteria to place more emphasis on expertise in strategic industries, regulatory systems, and emerging economic and social issues.

Carney defended the decision by arguing that experience in elected office, government, and legislative processes can make the Senate more effective. But a new Abacus Data survey finds Canadians are not entirely convinced that strong party backgrounds should become a more regular feature of Senate appointments.

This is just sad, and somewhat worrying. Having to remind my older family members to not entirely rely on AI or take what one might spit out at them at face value all the time because I'm encountering more and more "well [algorithm] says" whenever I talk to them.

Becoming a real issue.

Lets just elect the LLMs directly if this is how politicians are going to act.

It's cheaper and cuts out the middle man.

Huge issue, not just in older people, the youth are also being ruined by AI and we aren’t doing anything about it. They literally aren’t learning right now, when our collective IQ peaked and is now on a decline we need to stop and fix it. No one wants to however because that is hard and involves a lot of fighting, time, and money.

Institutionalized me says I'll do anything to support my team and improve my workplace with no expectations of compensation.

Selfish me says why should I, a top performer, sacrifice time and energy to support and train weaker members who get paid the same as me? Espeically if my managers who get paid more than me are the kind to dump their work on me.

Can't even find good staffers these days, gotta out source to AI, machines taking parliamentary jobs, how about we replace MPs with AI too?

How about when you get 'top performer' for your yearly review and along with that a 2% pay raise......then your coworker get 'Meets expectations' for their review and gets a 1% pay raise. Kind of makes you question all those extra hours, responsibilities, accolades from other departments/groups gathered and extra initiatives.......

We could outsource to Americans like Maia Johnson.
Nah.

Why use humans at all?

We have LLM making speeches by proxy in legislatures, lets just elect them directly.

Vote between open AI, Gemini and Grok

I sure hope that this is a tongue-in-cheek response
I've seen people here already just give up their critical thinking skills to AI, and as bad as that is, at least they are just people on a online forum. It's sad, but whatever.

But politicians just letting AI write their speeches, telling them how to think...at least with staffers you have a collection of like minded humans. Back and forth, pushback, human correction. What do we have now, like minded AI?

It's pathetic.

Using AI willy-nilly without knowing how it works (and doesn't) is bad, but in the bigger scheme of things, I wonder if, maybe, if political parties allowed their members to speak their piece without having to generally be centrally controlled by a party borg, you wouldn't need as much "reading off the script"? 🤷‍♂️

I'm more worried about young people, because if they learn to use AI as a crutch now, they always will.

Older people using it is more sad and amusing because you get videos like that.

On a whole, watching humanity just give up being able to think critically not simply to AI, but to tech giants has me concerned that we are not ready for what's coming with the next LLMs being cooked up by current LLMs

Videos like above will have more party centralization to avoid gaffes like that.
