Do you legitimately think he just randomly checked with the ethics committee if he can do a 1-week vacation for no real reason at all,

That petition is dumb. Dude’s job is to represent his nation’s interests in Canada and to carry out engagement and diplomacy. He’s doing that job. What we don’t like is the underlying policy and diplomatic approach.

At least through him we get a really good eye into what the administration wants here, through a not-too-thick filter.

Not declaring someone who represents the largest potential threat to your country, actively threatening your sovereignty persona non-grata is dumb.

I think it’s a bit late to kick him out, but the day he made those comments or the day they learned of them he should have been sent packing.

Sometimes you need to cut off diplomatic relations to prove a point. When you reach a red line (and suggesting annexing your country is one of them IMO) you need to make it very clear they passed it and not to again.

Declaring someone PNG, even an ambassador, is not the same as breaking off diplomatic relations. They would just send somebody else and, given this Administration, would likely also be a dick.

Breaking off diplomatic relations is a 'nuclear option' and has been described as some as a step short of declaring war. I'm no expert in international law but have to believe there would a ton of knock-on effects.
