Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Moreover, to keep it "blind" from the owner, they normally "switch" the major holdings that would clearly be known to the holder in the first few months months of the blind trust so that, by switching them to something else, the owner would now not know what is in his portfolio. That's how a blind trust is supposed to work.
Nobody operates a blind trust like that. Selling off assets for no rhyme or reason is not working in the owner's best interests and almost certainly goes against the instructions they left.

A blind trust is basically caretaker mode and almost always comes out mostly the same as it went in.

What you're suggesting can be accomplished much easier by simply liquidating the entire portfolio and putting everything in a mutual fund.

I just watched the full interview on CNBC this morning, just under 9mins.

Speaking openly and frankly - and giving credit where credit is due - PP did a huge favour for Carney and for Canada. He clearly laid out that Canadians are 'wounded' by what Trump has done to us and called for us to go back to the table and go back to tariff free trade between us. He also did a solid job of informing the panelists and US audience that we are firmly moving ahead with diversifying our trade away from the US and on our own terms.

Personally, I'd like to see Carney publicly acknowledge and 'thank' PP for what he said. I believe that PP deserves this. PP showed the Americans that we are 'united' in this fight and that they can't divide us on this issue. If any of Trump's Cabinet watched this whole interview they may need to be re-thinking their path forward, because honestly PP did a great job in informing the US viewers that they are in the wrong on this.

He needs to put the “Blame Canada” and separatist “influencers”, including the likes of Jivani, in their place. They are anchors keeping him and the party down. I fear that they now have more power than him in the party though.

Oh I agree, they need to be purged. There very well could be a division forming, or already existing, within the party that PP is trying to manage.

That’s what happens when you try to get the PPC voters rather than a broader chunk of the electorate. I’d feel sorry for him if he hadn’t invited them into the tent in the first place.

Unlike those to my left I don't believe he would accept a bad deal, so I imagine we'd be pretty much right where we are.

I do believe however that diversification attempts would be a lot harder for him, if they were made at all.

I believe he would have happily sacrificed Ontario and Quebec industrial jobs to just get more oil and gas sales to the US. Kinda what happened under Harper.

This is really why some of the strongest "Elbows up" response is in those provinces. They are trying protect to the few manufacturing jobs left. And politicians who don't sound sympathetic to this are going to get pummelled in the polls. Poilievre is finally starting to sound like he gets this.

I think a lot of people are forgetting how to Poilievre came to power. He courted the Convoy crowd. These influencers were all part and parcel of an attempt at a Canadian MAGAesque movement. He led their parade and pushed O'Toole. So they are very much his people. He can't control the party without them. But now he's starting to understand that he can't win with them.

Not just him. You have people like Kenney who did the same in Alberta. And are suddenly shocked to see populists wreck their party's brand. Why the surprise?

The Chinese were evil because primarily they were not contributing to his Bank account.
I cannot for the the world understand what may have happened and caused the great man to change his opinion......

Because the EU is so awesome... I guess
Odd take (or perhaps a quick reflexive one).

Perhaps it is about the fact that the EU is arguably the second largest economy in the world. Market size matters, especially if you are trying to reduce your reliance on the largest economy, without getting in bed with the third largest.

Old stereotypes may have less utility these days,

The European Union has a nominal GDP of roughly $20 trillion to $23 trillion, making it smaller than the United States ($30 trillion to $32 trillion) but larger than China when measured in nominal terms. [1, 2]

Nominal GDP (Current US Dollars)
    • United States: ~$32.4 trillion (largest single-country economy)
    • European Union: ~$21–$23 trillion (second or third, depending on year-to-year exchange rates)
    • China: ~$19–$21 trillion (roughly 20% smaller than the EU in nominal terms) [1, 2, 3, 4]

Wait you mean economic diversification isn’t just a binary choice between two substitutable options!?

So reading it, we would get a ton of benefits here without actually being an EU member. Including visa free work and travel. That would be huge for tourism and businesses

Indeed, although the EU has a habit of infiltrating its own particular brand of overwhelming red tape bound bureaucracy into member nations to the detriment of collective efficiency, effectiveness and competitiveness.

I suppose the devil will be in the details...

Cutting red tape at EU level: businesses are not feeling the relief

More than 60 per cent of European companies consider excessive regulatory burdens to be a major barrier to investment in the EU. For SMEs, bureaucracy remains the single greatest obstacle to growth. Echoing Mario Draghi’s assessment, the OECD confirms that the rising regulatory burden in the EU absorbs considerable resources, diverts businesses from productive activities and raises the fixed costs of doing business – with negative implications for scaling, innovation and competitiveness.

Does that mean EU citizens would be able to live and work visa free in Canada?
