Heather Mallick: I believe Canada got it right with Afghan War memorial design but why don’t you be the judge (Toronto Star/Heather Mallick) Ottawa compromised the integrity of Afghanistan memorial by interfering in design process (Globe and Mail/Alex Bozikovic)

How to Lose Friends and Alienate Countries

I guess the US won't be needing us to re-up in 2011 then...  I think the strongly worded letters would be best sent by US servicemen in Kandahar who will have to fill the gap when CF personnel are "kicking back"

    Ahmadinejad Speaks at Columbia University

In 1921, Lord Birkenhead (the Lord Chancellor) said of lesbianism: "I would be bold enough to say that of every thousand women, taken as a whole, 999 have never even heard a whisper of these practices" God knows what he'd make of a girls gone wild video...  :o

"Supporting troops needn't mean backing war" - UK Tory MP

Shared under the Fair Use provisions etc. etc. - original article and public comments here. Johnston is like something out of the pages of "The Chap" but it's not impossible he will be the next Mayor of Greater London, replacing Red Ken Livingstone.

Harper tells Bush we are Leaving Afghanistan in 2009

There is no way the Americans didn't already know the score.  Nothing ever gets decided at summits - it just gets admitted to.

MWO Mario Mercier R22e and MCpl Christian Duchesne 5 Fd Amb - 22 Aug 2007

If RC's presence in Afstan is separately managed from "English" CBC then I would hold fire on eCBC - after all you don't want to lose Mercer who has been one of the best supporters (in terms of reach to the ordinary punter) of the CF's mission.  Concentrate on the organisation that did wrong...

British military asks U.S. forces to leave Afghan province

That should have read "Afghanistan theatre" - bit of a brain-fade in mid-post I think.  :(

British military asks U.S. forces to leave Afghan province

Isn't the problem that the US SF don't answer to ISAF command but are a separate operation?  Therefore the ISAFers get the blame when USSF call in airstrikes? It's looking likely that the British are going to be leaving southern Iraq soon.  I would expect to see some more commitment to the Iraq...

Boeing to shut down C-17 production

How much did we pay upfront though?  It *is* a good time to be paying, with the USD in the tank and not likely to climb soon.

Canada's First Nations - CF help, protests, solutions, etc. (merged)

The blockade has shown two things though - 1.  The CN railway line is a single point of failure which would have disastrous economic consequences if closed for *any* reason for an extended period.  The closed parts of the CP line between Ottawa and Toronto should be acquired by Ontario and...

The Michael Moore Super Thread- Merged

FYI - marrying someone and bringing them in as family class means three years (not 10) obligation for social assistance repayments (even if they bunk off 10 minutes after they land at Pearson) but does not include OHIP as far as I know.  Also - while married applicants do undergo medicals...

Is the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan over in Feb 2009?

I'm not sure it's not a bad idea for Afstan combat ops to end in 2009.  However, I think Layton could be corralled into supporting a return to Kabul in aid-to-civil-power and training roles.  Some of his voters wouldn't like that but if the Libs, Tories and BQ signed on, his few political...

Peaceniks Try Direct Mail on Vandoos Destined for AFG

Valcartier - perhaps if you're going to depend on the word of a single person to back the campaign you are doing, it would be better to have encountered Mr Juarez directly and assured yourself independently that his bona fides were credible, not least that the second highlighted portion in fact...

Harper in Afghanistan on unannounced visit

If it was purely the journos speculating on the troops departure I'd be happy to assume they had other duties - but an officer told them to get back in which seems like they were bunking off to me I'm afraid.
