2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

Or maybe they are trying to just stay ahead of things they know are coming.

Starting to think that there is a slow leak of info about compromised candidates. I mean the LPC has one that gets dropped then all of a sudden a flood gate of CPC ones that overshadow that one…

Chiang is not the liberals one and only dropped candidate. There was Dahla, Keeper and Arya to name a few.

Both parties were caught flat footed by the writ. True, they knew it was coming, but still. Both parties were horribly short of candidates. In a rush to fill them, they took those that were vouched for by local committees, those that voiced a will to run and even approached those they thought were good.

One party isn't looking or caring who or what their candidates are. Even if they act like agents of China. At least not until police action was floated. I expect that we have not heard the last about compromised candidates in their team. Either during the election or in the House should they be successful.

The other party appears, now that things are rolling, to be taking a deeper dive into the nominations and ensuring their candidates won't blindside the party. They are turning up things that were missed on the first cursory look, that could jeopardise the party's election.

I like that they are being thorough. I like that when they find something, they are taking swift and decisive action to correct the problem. Better to find it now, than when they are in Parliament.

YMMV

What are you suggesting?
If you already know what's best for the country, why stimy progress by entertaining countering views?
We know any candidate the Conservatives have as a party leader will basically be evil.

Makes sense to just trust the Liberals having our best interests at heart and do away with the expensive election process.
Soooo….maybe getting that security clearance right about now would be a good idea to see what is going on in his own party?
It looks like he does know what's going on in his party without the clearance. He just turfed 4 members.

Having clearance didn't stop Trudeau from ignoring the interference going on in the LPC. It also didn't make him give up the names of those involved after the inquiry released its info, the inquiry the Liberals fought tooth and nail to avoid looking into interference in the first place.

The security clearance is hardly the magic spell people are making it out to be.

People get dropped all the time in elections for all sorts of stuff. 4 in Two days? That’s a problem. And you don’t take deep dives in week two of a campaign. That should have been before. And to be honest I am sure the conspiracy types were more than welcome when they thought they were facing Trudeau and still well ahead. Only now that they became liabilities were they removed.
I like that they are being thorough. I like that when they find something, they are taking swift and decisive action to correct the problem. Better to find it now, than when they are in Parliament.
They weren’t thorough though. That’s what led to this. Glad it’s being handled now but that was not thorough. the media was likely launching on some of these so they got ahead.
Yes

I'm kinda intrigued to see so many people seeing Team Red best poised to deal with cost of living/inflation - here's a top three breakdown by party:
Banker CEO as the champion of housing affordability. Basically the opposite of every Hallmark movie ever made.

Since Poilievre became party leader the 'Progressive' rally cry has been Conservatives are friends of the rich and corporate elite! Then over night Progresives suddenly became pro off shore tax evasion and making a corporate investment manager their new king. Wild.

real estate rental company landlord doesn’t exactly ring pro housing affordability either…

And he is a big proponent of trickle down economics which has not really worked over the years.

Assuming you mean Poilievre, as far as I'm aware Poilievre is either he half owner or full owner of 1x condo which he rents out. Is there more to the story than that?

Do you really see the CEO of 2x country banks comparable to a landlord of a single unit?

Building Homes, Not Bureaucracy

After 8 years of Justin Trudeau, housing costs have doubled. Before Trudeau, it took 25 years to pay off a mortgage – now, it takes 25 years just to save for a down payment. Things have gotten so bad that some families are forced into 90-year mortgages that they will never pay off. Only in Canada has housing become so unaffordable so quickly. Toronto is ranked as the world’s worst housing bubble, and Vancouver is the third most unaffordable housing market on earth, worse than New York City, London, England and Singapore — a tiny island with 2,000 times more people per square kilometer than Canada.

Meanwhile Carney is unveiling his "signature housing plan" and "flipping the script" on housing at a scale "not seen in generations".
It sounds like an infomercial, but wait, there's more. He's creating the Build Canadian Homes organization to act as a developer to make "deeply" affordable housing.
To get affordable home building started, BCH will supply $25 billion in debt financing and $1 billion in equity financing to "innovative Canadian prefabricated home builders."

A Liberal Party backgrounder explained that BCH will also issue bulk orders of housing units from Canadian modular and prefabricated home builders in order "to create sustained demand."

Billions of dollars being dumped into the promise of new homes. I think we all know how that will turn out.

No not at all. Shows who has more managerial experience to be sure.

And CEO of large company means anti housing? So far his housing plan based on post ww2 style plan seems way better in my mind.

Cancelling the home accelerator plan, boutique tax cuts and a gst cut on homes that could further expose the market to investment buyers don’t seem like the better options in my mind.

Trudeau 2015
Liberals will invest in the middle class and those working hard to join it by making it easier to find an affordable place to call home, said the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today.

“Safe, adequate, and affordable housing is essential to building strong families, strong communities, and a strong economy,” said Mr. Trudeau. “We have a plan to make housing more affordable for those who need it most – seniors, persons with disabilities, lower-income families, and Canadians working hard to join the middle class.”

A Liberal government will restore federal leadership on affordable housing by investing in a comprehensive National Housing Strategy that will:

  • Prioritize significant new investments in affordable housing and seniors’ facilities, as part of the Liberals’ historic ten-year investment of nearly $20 billion in social infrastructure
  • Provide $125 million per year in tax incentives to increase and substantially renovate the supply of rental housing across Canada;
  • Finance the construction of new, affordable rental housing for middle- and low-income Canadians;
  • Inventory all available federal lands and buildings to see what could be repurposed, and make it available at low cost for affordable housing in communities where there is a pressing need;
  • Modernize the existing Home Buyers’ Plan so that it helps more Canadians finance the purchase of a home; and
  • Review escalating home prices in high-priced markets – like Vancouver and Toronto – to keep home ownership within reach for Canadians living in these areas.

Carney 2025

We will make it easier for Canadians to find an affordable place to call home.

  • As part of our new, ten-year investment of nearly $20 billion in social infrastructure, we will prioritize significant new investment in affordable housing and seniorsfacilities.
  • We will undertake a review of escalating home prices in high-priced markets – like Vancouver and Toronto – to determine whether speculation is driving up the cost of housing.
  • We will increase the new residential rental property rebate on the GST to 100 percent, eliminating all GST on new capital investments in affordable rental housing.
  • This will provide $125 million per year in tax incentives to increase and substantially renovate the supply of rental housing across Canada.

What script is Carney "flipping" exactly? Sounds like the same old Liberal promises just from a different mouth.

I didn’t mention a script flip. The plan is objectively better than PPs. you missed a few things

  • Create Build Canada Homes (BCH) to get the federal government back into the business of home building, by:
    • acting as a developer to build affordable housing at scale, including on public lands;
    • catalyzing the housing industry by providing over $25 billion in financing to innovative prefabricated home builders in Canada, including those using Canadian technologies and resources like mass timber and softwood lumber, to build faster, smarter, more affordably, and more sustainably; and,
    • providing $10 billion in low-cost financing and capital to affordable home builders.
  • Make the housing market work better by catalyzing private capital, cutting red tape, and lowering the cost of homebuilding:
    • cutting municipal development charges in half for multi-unit residential housing while working with provinces and territories to keep municipalities whole;
    • reintroducing a tax incentive which, when originally introduced in the 1970s, spurred tens of thousands of rental housing across the country;
    • facilitating the conversion of existing structures into affordable housing units; and,
    • building on the success of the Housing Accelerator Fund, further reducing housing bureaucracy, zoning restrictions, and other red tape to have builders navigate one housing market, instead of thirteen.
These measures will build on the elimination of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for first-time homebuyers on homes at or under $1 million.

While the factors influencing housing affordability are numerous and complex, an obvious factor is that were not building small and medium sized houses (900-1500sqft) in favour of multistory monstrosities (2200-3000sqft). Housing had always followed the population curve. Newlyweds, first timers = small. Couple with older kids = medium. Family with teens = large. Empty nest = small to medium, and the cycle repeats. We have no bookends on the market, which is where they're needed the most.

I didn’t mention a script flip.
Right that was Carney's infomercial style platform release.

The plan is objectively better
No doubt the plan sounds great every election cycle. Objectively the Liberals have failed to achieve their plan year after year after year for the last 10 years.
$125 million per year in tax incentives to increase and substantially renovate the supply of rental housing across Canada.
This has been promised for the last 10 years and it's promised again. Does it actually happen?

you missed a few things
Always :)

The Liberal party doesn't have a great record with contractors. The BCH will be a "lean, mission-driven organization,". Yeah sure. Again we know what that will look like.

  • Make the housing market work betterby catalyzing private capital, cutting red tape, and lowering the cost of homebuilding:
    • cutting municipal development charges in half for multi-unit residential housing while working with provinces and territories to keep municipalities whole;

I obviously can't speak to the finer details of these promises because it's way out of my arcs.

  • reintroducing a tax incentive which, when originally introduced in the 1970s, spurred tens of thousands of rental housing across the country;
Is this the same tax incentive I mentioned about that's been promised for 10 years or is this a new tax incentive?

Brookfield has tons of real estate they rent/ lease out.

So, almost no tariff on vehicles and 10% on other select items. No auto jobs should be lost. Sound like, on the whole, comparatively, we made out fairly good for now.

I wonder what crisis Carney is going to use to fearmonger voters with now. He can't use the spectre of thousands of lost jobs, now that tariffs aren't the issue they were 24 hrs ago.

That's all pretty cool. Just one problem.

Liberals never fulfil their campaign promises. Unless it's gun theft or shutting down O&G.

And if they do, under Carney, I expect we'll see Brookfield involved somehow.

What fear mongering? We are dealing with an unpredictably president. This is far from over.

Tariffs absolutely are still an issue. A Windsor stelantis plant just shut down for two weeks (for now) because of all of this.

Jobs are still very much at risk.

I can’t really get anyone to believe in the plan. Just that the plan is better.

"Shutting down O&G" Yes thats why the federal government bought TMX to finish it, to shut down oil and gas. It's a cold hard fact that the liberals are the only party in 30 years to have built a pipeline. Yes C69 is a problem yet look how many projects were approved before it that industry them selves pulled the plug on, the collapse in natural gas prices around 2018 lead to companies shelving a ton of projects that were approved, and as much as the CPC wants to blame the government, government policies in Canada didn't collapse NG prices.
