2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

It was pretty dull, though Pierre saying he would reach 2% GDP sometime in the 2030s to me says defense isn't a priority for him.
To be fair, our economy is in such bad shape, we probably can't afford to spend 2% of GDP until a few years of good economic stewardship is practiced...

I didn't hear anything in the debate that would lead me to believe either party will prioritize defence...

If Poilievre would have promised to meet it by 2029 would that have been proof he cares more about defense than Carney?
Nope but it shows he would atleast see it as a priority. Part two if their arctic strategy was released today, and it's a rehash of mostly old promises and also of a few things the liberals already promised.

Is it possible defense is a priority but he's showing integrity by not making promises he knows he can't keep? Like Bill Blairs 2% by 2027?

If the LPC were serious about defence they would explain how they are going to get to 2% and sustain it.
They would explain how they will either cut spending in some programs and redirect it to defence or state they will deficit finance the whole deal.

Since they have not done that I guess they are not serious.

Not a matter of priority. It's a matter of being pragmatic and honest.

Pragmatic because nobody really knows how bad our overdrawn account really is. We can't trust this current government to give us a real number. Poliviere needs to see how bad our debt really is before promising a figure we don't have. Our military is in total shambles. Until we know what's wrong and how to fix it, we can't put a figure to it. He has two unknowns to deal with in order to make a promise of 2%. To give an estimate without those two factors being known is disingenuous and pandering.

And rather than lie, for votes, for favouratism or any other reason, Poliviere was being honest. He picked a realistic goal date. After we know how many billions, or trillions have been 'misplaced', intentional or not, by the liberals, he can append his date. That's even better.

That's just being realistic and honest to the people. Not an indicator of priority.

And what stole the show was the scrum after being cancelled because a CBC and rebel media rep got into a fight
From what I heard, Rebel News actually didn't do anything to provoke or egg on the situation.

Apparently some guy from CTV wouldn't stop going on & on & on about something 🤷‍♂️

Lotta words for “more than we can give right now” - no matter which party says it about either defence or VAC :(

That's easy. You just have to be confident, and have a plan like Blair outlined.

"My goal is to do it as quickly as possible and I'm increasingly confident we'll be able to," Blair said in response to questions from CBC News.

theres lots of defence spending that would help the economy. Infrastructure, housing. The Trudeau govt has blown through more money than the defence budget on who knows what. Were still talking about 2% when everyone has moved on to 3%

A haiku

I watched the debate.
All in all it was quite dull;
Needle won’t move much.

Debate was pretty well run. And yes it was a dull affair.

PP had a relatively good night but was completely overshadowed by rebel news shenanigans.

I found Blanchette rambled on things

Singh was trying his best to get attention by interrupting

Carmey was quite good when he broke down how his plans would work and was although he was the main target he was able to defend himself for the most part.

So yes, likely won’t move any needles significantly.
