2025 Federal Election - 28 Apr 25

That’s why commentators (including Blue ones) have noon only half-joking over the past few weeks when they’d say the Conservatives should be hoping for a boost in the NDP’s fortunes.
They only have themselves to blame after going hard against the NDP pre election.

Not surprisingly, every senior I've talked to has voted or is voting liberal. It's the company you keep; our own personal experiences are not an accurate reflection of the national turnout.
I can say the same. And they all voted already.

For sure.

However, which level of government builds/runs most (admittedly, not all) of the jail space? Not everyone ends up doing federal time.

And if jails are too crowded, how much less time are “guests” spending in jail (or being kept outta custody) because “sorry, no room at the inn”?

Any party platforms out there big on sending mo’ money to the provinces/territories to build more jail space? I haven’t heard any such promises but I stand to be corrected.

Another one of those federation problems (like health care) where, to mangle the proverb, failure often has more than one parent.
2 years less a day is served in provincial prison. Over that, it’s a federal penitentiary.

5k top up to TFSA's? not going to help the middle or lower class. Capital gains deferral? as long as it includes real estate, its not a good idea because it means real estate developers can buy and sell canadian properties like hot cakes without paying additional tax.
These two really stick in my craw. The actual effect will run completely contrary to his messaging and hurt the majority of his voting bases, but me.

Devil will be in the detail but if that capital gain deferral includes real estate it's going to be like pouring gas on the fire that is the housing crisis.

All in all it's an austerity budget for the situation we're in, just with a few billion in counterproductive ideological distraction noodles for the masses.

I really wish I had a CFP candidate in my riding.

The Liberal arctic plan has no such ref to building a full base, lots of mention of duel use infrastructure but not a dedicated military base
That means that when we build a new airstrip in the Arctic, fighter jets can take off to patrol our airspace while cargo planes land with food and supplies for remote communities. When we build new deepwater ports to support our destroyers patrolling Northern waters, we will build new trade routes for cargo ships that export Canadian goods.

Duel use infrastructure where fighter jets can take off and land, and transport planes can bring in supplies to a community.

A "dedicated" military base wouldn't be able to do that?

I mean 5 years ago we were all told to stay home, stop the spread, let the economy crash and to take experimental vaccines to help seniors. These seniors are now going out and voting for a platform that essentially gives a middle finger to the future of this country. Fuck these seniors.

duel use means civilian infrastructure used for military purposes, a dedicated CFB means military only, staffed by military personal, different ball game

True - and if people are whinging about short sentences, guess they’re more likely to be guests of the provinces. Almost two out of every 3 are in provincial facilities if we believe stats can …

My union voted to support the local Conservative candidate in the election, and as a Steelworkers union that is traditionally very strong NDP territory.
The NDP used to be known for supporting workers, largely union workers and mostly on the basis of wages and benefits. Over time, as unions lost the power they once had in elections, the NDP worked at shedding its image as a socialist-type party. They began to focus increasingly on what we now call woke issues as other parties captured the votes of more and more workers. In my opinion, the NDP is trying to find a reason to justify its existence. The same is true of the Green Party which started out as a would-be protector of the environment but is now (much like the NDP) focussing heavily on woke issues. Both parties seem to have largely abandoned their raison d’être.

On a personal note, a few decades ago I was approached by a work colleague about taking on a freelance job as editor of a newspaper for one of the larger well-known unions. Being a bit cash short at the time I said yes. To make a long story short, I didn’t stay at the job very long. Almost every ugly union stereotype you can imagine came across my desk. The union president was an outright liar and a thug who outwardly made it seem as if he was interested in the welfare of his member base, but in reality didn’t really seem to give a damn about them. I was basically forced to insert items in the newspaper that I knew were false. Back then the union and the NDP were almost one and the same, although the NDP had a bit more polish to it. I ended up coming away from that brief experience absolutely convinced that the average working man and woman had few true friends. So I can understand why so many workers have since deserted the NDP in search of other options…whether it’s voting for the LPC or the CPC.

As I see it, the CPC is benefitting from the existence of the NDP. Otherwise if the NDP were to cease operations most of its members would migrate over to the LPC which would then be able to occupy even more of a centre position. In other words market fragmentation is proving to be less harmful if not beneficial to the Conservatives.

Nothing on the CAF or National Defence issues.
- other than tasking TacHel to the border (and you have too few Helo's anyway)
almost nothing related to national defense, and no mention of 2% GDP, far cry from the usual CPC we know of being the party of national defense

Just editing for brevity.

I think you're trying to inturput negative intentions. Military only with no civilian workers or interoperability is not how the CAF works.

I also don't see anything on firearms.
I'm not worried. Reneging on that would be a death knell to the CPC. We all know what his policy is, no need to set Poly's hair on fire with just a few days left. Not discussing it sucks all the oxygen from that faction. If its not upfront, not many detractors will even think about the firearms issue. Canning the liberal plan will save millions at a comparatively small cost. I think it was a good move not mentioning it.

They didn’t really do much on firearms last round they were in power no? Registery was done with but the LPC never brought that back.

I suspect it’s a hot potato they won’t touch as PP walked away from that question recently.

And a minority CPC won’t touch that either.

I suspect the amnesty will just be extended under them.

One thing about a gun registry:

Who could be compromised to sell the registry to Organized Crime and nefarious people?
