2025 U.S. - Venezuela conflict

Wouldn't the seizing of this ship be an act of war under international law?

But who's going to do anything about it? If a Security Council resolution condemning the action or proposing "anything" was introduced the USA would veto it. It would be exactly the same reaction as when Russia invaded Ukraine. Well, not quite the same. Ukraine, thanks to Russian incompetence, was able to prevent the Russians from overrunning their country and thanks to support (limited though it has been at times) from many they have continued to defend. Who would to do the same for Venezuela?

The ship is being reported as the Guyana-flagged MT Skipper. US Treasury Department’a Office of Foreign Assec Control sanctioned it a couple years ago, purportedly for moving Iranian oil. I’ve seen reports that a warrant of seizure was issued by federal court a couple weeks ago.

Obviously the decision to seize this particular ship at this particular time and place is a very deliberate choice. It’s another incremental escalation against Maduro, shielded under a pretty widely accepted sanctions regime.

The War Zone is reporting that six Ef-18G Growler EW aircraft have arrived in Puerto Rico. The article also has information on the sized tanker:

There aren’t many reasons to deploy that many electronic attack aircraft…

Guardian article on the seizure of the tanker, including photos of the raiding party descending from MH-60 helicopter:

I want to know how close it was to shore. The message is dramatically heavier if it was under 12 nautical miles, within Venezuela’s territorial sea.

For a guy who wants a nobel peace prize he is doing everything he can to prevent that from happening.

Narco-Terrorists
Somali Pirates
Barbary Corsairs

Compare and contrast.
