2025 Wildfire Season

As of 0600 this morning Winnipeg is under a haze of wildfire smoke at ground level. Our inmates are forbidden from using the sports field due to the AQI - Air Quality Index.

Love that 3 letter acronym!!!

Except for the NW part of BC, we seem to be holding steady and low for fires with most dealt with quite quickly. However, our crews have been pulled from Manitoba (something you guys should not be too quick to forget) but I’m thinking maybe this province is in the calm before the storm.

The driest, and busiest, weekends of the year are just ahead of us so fingers crossed as the backcountry fills up with 'recreational users' ;)

I first noticed the smoke around 02:30 at work at HSC at first I thought it was mist.

I suspect that air that comes in chunks probably isn't all that healthy.

Its when its raining ash and/or so thick its sooty on your face....those are fire days I don't like.

I do however find AQI measures funny since they only tend to issue them for major centers...and not for the community immediately adjacent. Many folks complain of how bad it is in the city but forget where the source is.

That being said the impacts, especially on those with breathing issues, have to be a major issue.

We’ve found that the ash, soot and whatever that silky stuff is that settles in the farm fields is worse than the smoke when we start harvesting. And it gets into everything- the crops, air filters, screenage, watering ponds, the tops of barns and silos, on the leaves of fruit trees (and the next years fruit is blemished), outdoor clothing and livestock carry it around for months after a nearby fire.
