2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

You mean give him the same leeway & benefit of the doubt you give Carney & Co.?

You could look at that a few ways. The LPC party has been in power for 11 years. PMMC is a new leader. There is a well documented LPC track record of dithering.

Comparatively, Trump is not "new", but he's only one year into this term after a big loss. It is his last term. His party is temporarily in control. He has a track record of aggressively (maliciously?) pursuing his aims.

No, not the same.

I hate to break it to you this is Canada...everybody dithers, Liberal and Conservative alike it's what governments do in this country.
For the last 50 or 60 years anyway.

I hate to break it to you but that is only justification for the US doing what it's doing.

I managed to get about two thirds of the way through it. Did Trump get as much applause as Carney got for his speech?

Not sure it serves America other than to reveal true allies or those wearing a mask looking for any reason to slip into bed with authoritarian regimes like the CCP.
Given America does more trade with China than we do, wouldn't slipping into bed with China also be slipping into bed with America? Or is America's trade magically different from our because reasons?

I'm guessing you missed the last of Carney's speech where he talked about doing business with people we dont necessarily like, because it's good for Canada. The exact same approach America has been taking with trade since at least 1945.

I don't have to like or agree with Bob across the street, but if he wants to buy tomatoes from my garden at fair prices, I'll sell them to him. The same applies to countries. America doesn't particularly like Saudi Arabia, but as long as the Saudis keep the peace and buy American kit, America plays ball with them.

No, but The Beaverton's running this ...
:)

Meanwhile, from Catholic media:
Archived here.

How can we know yet? "formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland."

Let's wait and see. You're being too quick to dismiss the outcome that hasn't happened yet.

You're rather quick to give him credit.

Honest question. Is there any pronouncement from him that wouldn't you think was absolute genius?

The old maxim on leadership: 'You can delegate authority, but not responsibility'.

His hand-picked appointees, under his watch, have:

  • summarily executed mariners on the high seas (how quickly we forgot about those)
  • abducted the head of a sovereign nation
  • arrested and detained US citizens on US soil without probable cause (and possibly murdered one)
  • weaponized the justice system against his enemies (ya, I know, they all do it). Or at least tried; it turns out an interim federal attorney had no so much as litigated a parking ticket.

Actions vs words indeed.

Yep. The criticism from Americans and Trump fans on this is total bonkers. Most of Canada's allies to do more trade with China in both absolute and relative terms. We're the boy scout in all this. And where did that leave us? With two Canadians in jail for an executive the Americans decided not to prosecute in the end anyway.

Worse, Trump openly says that the US should exploit countries that rely on the US. He doesn't see the two thirds of Canadian exports to the US as sign of a special relationship. He sees it as weakness to be exploited. This is why even Stephen Harper is openly calling for diversification away from the US.

The Press Secretary has been spending the afternoon getting roasted to a crisp for lying, again.

The Democrats had the decency to hide Biden away when his cheese started to slide off his cracker.

Meanwhile they trot Trump out who is clearly losing his faculties time after time.

The fact that Harper is saying move away from the US is an inconvenience that PP and the Conservatives would love to go away.

I’m still not entirely convinced that striking a deal to sell your goods to someone and have them in turn sell theirs meets the bar for slipping into bed. When I ran a tire shop, I had a guy come in and buy tires from me. Just so happens he had a used hitch for sale that I needed. I bought it from him. Nothing even remotely erotic happened after that…

Very valid points. And when our government actually does something about the buried Chinese influence scandals I may reclaim some trust and faith.

Barely. And I am not sure they've truly learned their lessons yet.

If they want Trump to get off the Putin riding they need to help Ukraine defeat Russia. That's how they can show that the EU is actually strong.
And they need to find a consistent, reliable nat gas supplier.

I gave no credit. I’ve said let’s wait. It’s the same old story from the same old group; the sky is always falling until it isn’t, then the same folks loudly proclaim TACO! This setting is on repeat. It’s beyond hilarious at this point. Criticizing the actions and results is fine and fun, but criticism of imagined outrageous outcomes is loony.
