A Deeply Fractured US

I think this frame grab is developing into one of those “iconic photos of our times”.

By this point the officer holding the gun had watched his colleague remove the victim’s gun from his holster and move away with it. This photo was just as he was beginning to shoot.

With the slowed down versions the best count I’ve got is ten shots. Not sure how many officers fired. There’s a distinct possibility based on some analysis I’ve seen that the first shot was an ND of the victim’s own gun by the officer who had removed it from the holster and was walking away. Too bad the feds abandoned the perimeter and collapsed the crime scene before state investigators could thoroughly examine it.
Similar photos have caused great upheaval in the States in the past.

This is the comparison making the rounds all over.

I originally had phrases like "Democrat controlled liberal media apparatus propaganda" strewn throughout but thought it was too on the nose.
You were so close to being able to "steelman" in good faith positions with which you disagree.

Much of what you wrote is truly what some people believe. Some of it is incontrovertibly true (what the laws are, whether they've been faithfully executed, and what organized obstruction to government means), and the rest is the partisan shading. The latter shouldn't obscure the former.

The video compilation hits a little harder.
Tell Oh My GIF by Robert E Blackmon

... one of the many downsides of whats going on in Minnesota is the spotlight being taken away from the multi billion dollar fraud schemes that have been ongoing and ignored for years ...
Just because these forums focus pretty tightly on the LEO angle, and social media often focus on the sizzzle instead of the steak, I don't see any shortage of spotlight on fraud in Minnesota - VERY quick search of "fraud minnesota daycare" shows loads of material if people want to read it ....
"Spotlight" can sometimes be in the eye of the beholder.

I thought removing those phrases made my Steelman attempt more honest. Pointing out that I thought of including them shouldnt detract from my post; actually believing what you wrote isn't a prerequisite of steelmanning.

Then I think you win the substance points as well as style.

You can't make this up.

Don’t say ‘Watch out for ice’: FEMA warned storm announcements could invite memes

Homeland Security officials have urged disaster response staff at the Federal Emergency Management Agency to avoid using the word “ice” in public messaging about the massive winter storm barreling toward much of the United States, according to two sources familiar with the directive.

The concern is that the word could spark confusion or online mockery, given the ongoing controversy surrounding US Immigration and Customs Enforcement — also known as “ICE.”

Well this is interesting…

the New Hampshire Episcopal bishop who urged his clergy to finalize their wills and get their affairs in order and prepare for a “new era of martyrdom" at a vigil for ICE shooting victim Renee Good.

Bishop A. Robert Hirschfeld of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire also criticized the "horror unleashed in Minneapolis" and said people of Christian faith should not fear death in a Jan. 9 speech, a video of which has since gone viral.

If my limited knowledge of Christian denominations is correct, the Episcopalians are basically Anglicans. I believe that the are largely liberal, but they are usually pretty staid.

The one thing that truly annoys authoritarian and semi authoritarian governments is humor. Trump if he has had a stroke , it was probably either after watching the late night talkshows or reading cartoons of his administration .
These people can not stand to be mocked .
Donald Trump is a vindictive thin skinned 4 year old whose own humor borders on sadism.

"Recent events have brought Trump’s governing style into sharper focus, 'Fascist' best describes it, and reluctance to use the term has now become perverse."

Jonathan Rauch is usually someone not prone to exaggeration.
Until recently, I resisted using the F-word to describe President Trump. For one thing, there were too many elements of classical fascism that didn’t seem to fit. For another, the term has been overused to the point of meaninglessness, especially by left-leaning types who call you a fascist if you oppose abortion or affirmative action. For yet another, the term is hazily defined, even by its adherents. From the beginning, fascism has been an incoherent doctrine, and even today scholars can’t agree on its definition. Italy’s original version differed from Germany’s, which differed from Spain’s, which differed from Japan’s.

I accepted President Biden’s characterization of the MAGA movement as “semi-fascist” because some parallels were glaringly apparent. Trump was definitely an authoritarian, and unquestionably a patrimonialist. Beyond that, though, the best description seemed to be a psychological one propounded by John Bolton, Trump’s first-term national security adviser: “He listens to Putin, he listens to Xi, he listens to how they talk about governing unburdened by uncooperative legislatures, unconcerned with what the judiciary may do, and he thinks to himself, Why can’t I do that? This doesn’t amount to being a fascist, in my view, [or] having a theory of how you want to govern. It’s just Why can’t I have the same fun they have?

You're being generous.

What a contrast. Minnesota National Guard shows up with hot drinks and snacks for demonstrators.

Tim Walz has also responded to Bondi's letter.

Exactly why I hope the CAF never gets into domestic issues and why I absolutely detest the militarization of police. It makes the cops think the public is their enemy while simultaneously eroding trust in the military. If the cops want to be jackboots, let them dress like thugs so the public can tell the difference.
