The merger will result in a 4 star CG. Maybe the plan makes sense but I would like it more with a LTG in command.

That's interesting. I presume from this that the Army components of USEURCOM and USAFRICOM are merging (As have the Navy, the Marines and the Air Force merged their respective commands) but that the respective Unified Combatant Commands in Europe and Africa have not, and there is resistance to doing so.

The consolidation comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s plan to move 12,000 troops out of Germany. Details are few and far between on what would move out and when.

Another push from the administration looks to consolidate U.S. European Command and Africa Command, but House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith, D-Wash., said Oct. 7 at an American Security Project virtual event that he opposes the effort.

I'm not quite sure what to make of that. There seems to be some gamesmanship going on here, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

As to making the commander USAREUR-AF a four-star; I wonder whether the fact that the current USEURCOM commander is a four star Air Force Officer has anything to do with that.

I assume this is happening because alot of bigger f*ckups in the GWOT etc have happened under the AFRICOM umbrella if, for no other reason, a lack of resources and command oversight?

As far as I know the recently re-activated V Corps' main HQ remains at Fort Knox and has only about a third of it's 600 some odd folks in Poland at it's forward HQ. To this point, it has no formally assigned formations or units but commands troops that rotationally deploy to Poland. I look forward to seeing V Corps grow under a new administration.
