Alberta government thread

And in other Alberta political corruption news ...

This wouldn't be related to the provincial government controversy, but I wouldn't be surprised if the allegations/complaint originated from someone close to UCP leadership. There was no love lost between the former City administration and the province. Even though former one term mayor Gondex did not have the most successful term at City Hall, I don't recall any outright accusations of corruption being made previously about her.

I don't recall either, perhaps it has to do with either the flames Arena deal, Green line, or our water infrastructure?

On Saturday: “we work to get back the rights we have under the constitution.”

Today it is: we need to change the constitution to create the right we are working to “get back”.

Alberta wants to set aside commission report, strike MLA committee to look at 91-seat legislature

NDP accuses UCP government of trying to gerrymander electoral boundaries to help them

Alberta's UCP government wants to take another run at redrawing provincial riding boundaries, proposing to strike a new committee of MLAs to consider increasing the number of seats in the house by four.

The motion to create the special select MLA committee, which was added to the order paper early Thursday, rejects the proposed electoral boundaries recommended by an independent commission.

If passed, a committee made up of three MLAs from the UCP and two from the NDP would be set with Brandon Lunty, the UCP MLA for Leduc-Beaumont, as chair.

I tried to see what the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission report had to say, but the link to their site just brings you to Elections Alberta. Though they may be trying to limit access to that commission's report, by rooting around in Elections Alberta copies of the commission's work can be found there. Since the notwithstanding clause cannot be used in this situation, I believe the main goal is to get everything tied up in court to stall the use of the maps made by the independent commission that would see Edmonton getting more seats.

This is heavily implied to the UCP wanting to essentially create this committee just to recreate the minority report and use it which heavily Greymanders the cities which would essentially turn most of the major cities into UCP seats by using the rural areas to water down the NDP city vote. It's also interesting that the UCP wants this done by Oct 25th, 3 days after all the referendums that they are holding. Their PR to try and explain this move has been terrible, I've watched Rob Anderson attacking the NDP, and multiple political science profs on X just for being critical but never offering a counter argument as to why this is needed.
