All Things AB Separatism (split fm Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???)

I'm actually ok with this. I want an accurate and truly representative Gov. Not one that agrees with me.

Which is a valid argument.

I suspect that if Canada went to some form of PR, we'd see the party system change and fracture as governments became more about coalitions and less about seeking a majority.

Sounds good to me. As long as it's accurate and representative.

I think an unelected Senate appointed by Proportional Representation could work if done right.

To me since the purpose of the Senate is to represent the Provinces/Territories (not the Federal political parties) then the Senators should be allotted on a Proportional Representation basis from a slate of candidates based on the results of the Provincial elections.

For example, Saskatchewan has 6 Senate seats (let's ignore for now any changes to seat numbers to provide equal representation to Provinces or Regions).
That might produce an unreasonable amount of churn, with provincial elections not snapped to a single fixed election date schedule.

Depending of the veracity of the claim, and depending on the intent of the separatists, that is skating really close to treason.
I'd say it's treason, even if it doesn't meet the CC definition.

They are inviting a neighbour to occupy sovereign Canadian soil, before even having discovered whether or not the people of the province want to separate.

It may not meet the letter of the law but....the spirit of the law has been interfered with.

Fck them.

Of course it's treason.

Unless you win.

The rebellion which resulted in Magna Carta was treason. The Glorious Revolution was treason. The US was founded by treason.

AB separatists are tilting at a windmill, and I doubt their ability to found a nation which would be an improvement on Canada unless they articulate in advance (it shouldn't be necessary with so much political history behind us to have the revolution or civil war first and then spend a decade or more deliberating changes) what kind of constitutional principles they would enact, but not all revolutions fail to result in improvements. I'd prefer them to stop bleating about referenda and perceived slights and injustices and first advance their ideas for governance.

The problem is, they aren't acting in a vacuum. In theory what they are doing is a silly tantrum, but by engaging with our neighbour who has on a few occasions talked about annexing Canada, and Greenland, their silly tantrum might have real-world consequences.

Getting embarrassed by the referendum in 2019 would have been amusing, but there is a non-zero chance that the Whitehouse might back claims of a rigged vote... Which could lead down a very negative path.

Unless polls going into a referendum show a 50/50 split, doubters won't have much of a basis for their claims.

A silly tantrum is one way of blowing off steam and taking pressure out of a system. Post-election conspiracy-mongering is a kind of silly tantrum. If we can't tolerate silly tantrums, we've lost the plot for liberal governance.

It’s quite naive to believe that a recently separated Alberta, beholden to America with a half trillion dollar loan, would remain its own independent nation.

Silly tantrums are fine, but sometimes they happen at the wrong time and have unintended consequences...

Like I said, in 2019 it would be amusing, now I have some concerns that our southern neighbour will use the referendum as a pretext to openly interfere in our politics/governance.

Yeah, they might want to just be a US state. That would be OK, too. I doubt any constitution cooked up by AB separatists would be much different than the US one.

Lots of smart people told us that Trump was having a harmless silly little tantrum prior to January 6, 2021. Many said there was no harm in indulging him.
