Not guilty by reason of insanity.

A Texas jury found Andrea Yates not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday in the drowning deaths of her young children in the bathtub of their suburban home.
Springroll said:I don't agree with the verdict, but I will say that Postpartum Depression can do a number on a woman's mind.
GAP said:It can be devastating to individuals and families. Until recently it was not considered to be serious enough to warrant treatment, but finally it is getting to be recognized as a potential life shattering issue.
Frederik G said:So's depression, schizophrenia, paranoia, and a host of other things. It doesn't excuse violence, especially not killing children.
Abuse of drugs also "does a number" on someones head in the long term.. Does that mean a drug addict should avoid prison if they kill someone? After all, they have a mental problem, right? Not the same cause, but the same end result.

TMM said:When you watch what PPD can do to your wife, mum, daughter, sister, girlfriend then you will likley have a different opinion.
Springroll said:I wish there was a more definitive way to diagnose PPD before it got to far, but sadly it really is based upon the mother recognizing and telling someone about the way she is feeling.
TMM said:True, but it is also up to spouse, friends, family to keep watch. Thank God my husband did. Yates had it far worse. And no I am in no way saying slaughtering your children is okay, just trying to get across that if you see your spouse having a rough time of it the last thing you do is keep having kids.
