Department of National Defence: Appointments to Royal Military College of Canada Board of Governors
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 22, 2006) - The Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Gordon O'Connor, today announced the appointment of seven new members of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) Board of Governors and the re-appointment of two current members.
New members:
- Vice-Admiral (Retired) Lynn G. Mason, Research Fellow at Dalhousie University's Centre for Foreign Policy Studies and former Commander of the Navy.
- Dr. David J. Bercuson, Professor at the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies, University of Calgary and Vice President (Research) for the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute.
- Brigadier-General (Retired) W. Donald Macnamara, Associate Adjunct Professor and Director of the Public Executive Program at Queen's University and former Director of the National Defence College.
- Brigadier-General (Retired) Charles Emond, former fighter pilot who has served as commandant of both the Royal Military College and le College militaire royal de Saint-Jean.
- Dr. Anne Irwin, Professor in the Department of Anthropology of the University of Calgary and Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute Chair in Civil-Military Relations.
- Lieutenant-General (Retired) Marc Caron, former Commander of the Army.
- Dr. Gerard Hervouet, Director of the International Peace and Security Programme at Universite Laval.
Re-appointed members:
- Mrs. Sonja Bata of the Bata International Center in Toronto
- Dr. Janice Gross Stein, Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management and Negotiation in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and the Director of the Munk Centre for International Studies.
There are nine seats on the Board for civilian ordinary members. The appointments are effective September 1st, 2006.
"I am pleased that these individuals have accepted to sit on the RMC Board of Governors and will help us steer it towards the future," said Minister O'Connor. "RMC provides a first rate education to our next generation of leaders and prepares them for the new challenges of an ever changing world."
Situated in Kingston, Ontario, RMC opened to its first class of military students in 1876. It is a bilingual institution, which offers university programmes in Arts, Science and Engineering, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels to future and actual Canadian Forces officers. Developing leadership and athletic skills are also part of the truly unique education RMC provides.
The Board of Governors of the Royal Military College of Canada reports to the Minister of National Defence; it provides advice and recommendations on matters relating to RMC, as well as reviewing the strategic direction of the College.
