Got an opportunity to spend a little time with HMCS MARGARET BROOKE this afternoon in Toronto. Welcoming crew, informative officers and a nice chat with the Captain and the Cox’n made for an awesome visit to see these useful and impressive vessels.

I noticed the Cox’n had his own chair on the starboard side of the bridge and when I asked him about it, the Captain burst out laughing and they exchanged a look. I wasn’t sure what it was all about, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before on an RCN bride, though I obviously stand to be corrected by those in the know here.

The reason I asked the Captain and the Cox’n was because it had “Cox’n” embroidered into the fabric on the back of it. As I mentioned, I’ve never seen that before and was curious, but their reaction when I brought it up was almost like an inside joke.

It's called the SO chair (Senior officer), but usually the XO sits in it, or the Watch Officer does sometimes during the night watch or when they are supervising Jr. Officers.

That would definitely explain her reaction. The Captain was having a pretty solid laugh when I brought it up.

So why not certify the flight deck for helo ops and use the hanger for the storage of offensive UAV's and possibly a launching system in the hanger that rolls out. Repurpose the avionics and aircrew spaces for 3D printing of drone components. Turn AOPS into a drone carrier?

It's not like we're in any hurry to get AOPS fully certified. They've been going to the Arctic for some time now, do we really need to operate a helo that badly.

The RCN already has a MOU with the CCG to operate CCG helos from the deck of AOPV's. That really hasn't happened but I suppose its all about the lack of flight deck certification. Again do we need to operate helos on AOPV's from the hanger or at all? It seems like AOPS can operate in the Arctic without a helo and do fine. Use the hanger for the current and planned RCN drones and have the ability to stage offensive drones with payload from the ship.

We are in a hurry, but aviation standards don't bend to RCN whims...

CCG Hellos are civilian, which means in some ways, their standards for operations are actually higher than ours. The RCN can't fly helos from AOPVs because the RCN and RCAF don't think it's worth effort/money.

We don't have stokers advise on helo ops, for the same reason Met Techs don't give advice on engineering configurations...
