Aug 2011: Marines Implicated in Suicide of Harry Lew in AFG

Not that I am of the opinion that humiliating and demeaning someone is a desired action, but; what are you doing to your child when you make them stand in a corner for a time out? These actions are sometimes mild punishments or lesson teaching events that are far short of corporal punishment.

I think a "time out" is supposed to be a withdrawal of contact, not an act of humiliation.

Humiliation is perceived by the receiver, the administer.

A trial begins this week for a third Marine accused of hazing a lance corporal who later committed suicide at their base in Afghanistan.  Lance Cpl. Carlos Orozco III is accused of putting his foot on the back of Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, ordering him to do push-ups, and pouring sand in Lew's face.  Orozco has been charged with assault, humiliating Lew, and cruelty and maltreatment. His general court-martial is scheduled to begin Tuesday at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.  Two other Marines have already been tried for allegedly mistreating Lew, of Santa Clara, Calif., in the hours before he killed himself on April 3.  A lance corporal pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and demoted to private first class. A sergeant was acquitted by a court martial jury.  The accusations against Orozco are among the most extensive of any in the case, which involves how the Marines reacted when Lew, one of their squad mates, fell asleep on watch duty late at their remote patrol base in Helmand province ....

A military jury on Friday found a Marine not guilty of hazing a fellow Hawaii-based lance corporal who killed himself in Afghanistan.

The panel of three officers and five enlisted Marines found Lance Cpl. Carlos Orozco III not guilty at a court-martial at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.

He was accused of humiliating and demeaning Lance Cpl. Harry Lew by pouring sand on his face and forcing him to do push-ups and leg lifts. Orozco was acquitted of charges involving the assault, cruel treatment and humiliation of Lew, of Santa Clara, Calif. Lew fatally shot himself at their remote Afghanistan patrol base on April 3. He was a nephew of U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif.

Orozco was the last of three Marines to be court-martialed for the alleged hazing of Lew. Another lance corporal last month pleaded guilty to assault after admitting he punched and kicked Lew. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a reduction in rank to private first class. A jury in a separate trial later found their squad leader, a sergeant, not guilty of humiliating and demeaning Lew ....
