I'm looking for any information on the development of an AVLB replacement for the Beaver (Leo Chassis). I've seen pictures of a prototype LAV based AVLB (I believe it's called a Piranha). Any time lines for development, possible contract tenders, characteristics, and capabilities of the new AVLB, etc would be much appreciated.

I don't know if there is a REPLACEMENT for the AVLB... something else, not a replacement.  One of the main reasons that a Leo chassis was used, is that its weight was required to counter-balance the bridge at max extension.  They can build something on a boat hull, I suppose, but cross country ability would be virtually nil.  the power pack would also be going flat out to drive the hydraulics required.  We could always drive a boat into the gap and drive across it, a la Applehuge..... ;D

Piranha is the name given to the family of vehicles that the LAV was based on and the two vehicles have since paralleled eachother in development (Piranha is based on European parts while LAV is North American).

I'm sceptical of any LAV based AVLB.  With the engine in the front, the LAV cannot produce as great a moment about the stab-blade.  This will limit the weight of bridge it can carry (thus shorter and reduced MLC).

My other concern specific to the Piranha AVLB is that it uses a scissor bridge (and its corresponding signature on deployment).

Lastly, for interoperability will we need a bridge that our allies can cross once we've launched it?

I suppose a lower MLC bridge could be used, but only for our own domestic, soft skinned, wheeled queens of the modern battlefield.  We would be virtually useless to any of our allies (even more so than now), who are still imposing their will with big, heavy, tracked battle wagons.  I know I'm looking at this from an old, wrinkly AVLB drivers perspective, but..."I yam wot I yam"....

What can replace our AVLB?
It has a low vis. signiture vs a scissors bridge as McG stated.
But I agree with Kat we still need them along with the Badger.

And speaking of Mobile Bridging, the Brits used the old MAB to cross the Euphrates which I thought was long gone. When I first saw the MAB was back in 79 in Germany and I was quite impressed seeing a crossing go in less than 30 min.'s and then all Class of veh. cross.

AHAHAHAHA!!!  That's the cutest thing I've ever seen!  Was it a Happy Meal toy?if you water it and talk to it every day, will it get any bigger?

I think Spr. Earl was referring to the MAB and not the river.
