Shortly after the Canadian Corps swarmed the Germans at Vimy Ridge - Canadian Engineers helped achieve a major blow at Hill 60 and the Ypres salient. 12 other mines - totalling around 1 million pounds of Ammonal were detonated on the German line.

The attached 3 images are the OC 3rd Cdn Tunneling Company`s report.

As the Germans said as they pulled back in 1918 - BE AMAZED!

When the image opens - put your cursor on it and click it when you see the red button in the bottom right hand corner.

Check this out 96 years ago tomorrow http://www.chavasse.u-net.com/messines.html

Canadian Engineers dug in 360,000 pounds of explosives under Germans Lines -

Here is an outline I put together on what happened at the 1st  Tunneling Company Site
http://www.cobwfa.ca/COBWFA2011/index.php/current-articles/40-personnel/90-major-cb-north-royal-engineer

Mines are shown as follows

Hill 60 A
Hill 60 B
St Eloi
Trench 127 Series

The OC's of 1st and 3rd Canadian Tunnelling Companies went on to
significant Mining activty post WW1 - one ran the Sullivan Mine in
Kimberly BC - the biggest Silver Mine in the World - the OC 1st
Tunnelling Company took out major hazards to navigation between
Vancouver and Nanaimo in BC

This summer I plan to write a story on the action including the KIAs
from the Canadian Sappers and driving directions to the sites

The story is generally well known but new developments in mapping mean
we can now guide you to the centre of the craters

I once went on my own battlefield wander about and collected some shrapnel from the area of Hill 60. It resides in a small tin in my basement, quietly reminding me of why the infantry need to be good diggers!
