Britain is ejecting hereditary nobles from Parliament after 700 years

I’m not sure if this is an improvement. Is it better to have some toff who was born into a seat, or some hack who kissed the right asses and greased the right palms?

🤷‍♂️

You know what Starmer et al will fill the place with.
Their buddies

They've been filling the place with "buddies" since before the Life Peerages Act (1958) when politicians and fellow travelers were made barons and their inbred first born sons inherited the title and seat. The only difference is that now inbred offspring don't get a vote.

Removing the hereditary peers, live devolution, is the legacy of Tony Blair and I wonder if really Britain is better governed today than it was when he was elected. I'm not going to defend hereditary power (although the one benefit of the remaining hereditary peers was that many were crossbenchers or independents) but the irony of Blair's reforms is that what Britain is left with is a ridiculously bloated version of our Senate.
