Yesterday he called Carneys cut to TFW a farce and “smoke with mirrors (sic)”, saying the IMP is worse than the TFWP and blaming general federal government apathy+ laziness to bring unneeded and uninvited populations of a size equivalent of a city the size of Surrey every year. Twice he went that direction- saying the Feds are bringing in “hundreds of thousands of unqualified, low skill people who cost the economy far more than they can possibly ever contribute”.
He’s clearly reading and applying Conservative Party BC ideas and conclusions.

They also demand certain services from the wrong levels of government.

My city has a indigenous coordinator and a environmental coordinator. Both positions shouldn’t exist in my opinion as they are Provincial/Federal responsibilities and have nothing to actually do with running a municipality.

I imagine a lot of cities have similar duplicate efforts which shouldn’t exist. Likely a lot of money could be saved just by eliminating those positions.

Agreed - those positions at a municipal level that are a Prov/Fed level should be scrapped, but what are the Mayor's friends gonna do when their jobs are eliminated? ;)

I would posit that a big part of the municipal environmental coordinator’s job is to ensure the municipality complies with provincial and federal legislation, reducing liability, and proposes remedies to gaps not addressed by said legislation within the municipality’s purview.

No idea if this is the case but you might find that the municipality set up those positions to take advantage of federal and/or provincial grants targeting indigenous programming.
 
Citizens demand services, but I don't recall even a vocal minority calling for crappily-executed projects (eg. north shore wastewater treatment plant, or, provincially, "fast ferries").
 
To be fair, the fast ferries was a response to the shipbuilding in BC shutting down, we knew we could not compete on traditional hulls. It was always a gamble and that is how the government should have articulated it. Then the Glen Clark made it his signature project, which put unreasonable pressure on it, and then Gordon Campbell stuck the knife into the industry by dumping them.

We had also tried to integrate them seamlessly into a very efficient RO/RO system, which no one else in the world had been able to do. The ferries structurally were well built and compared well or better than some fo the European ones. Heat dissipation was an issue as we stuck with diesels and not turbines. In the end the welders from that project went on to found quite a few aluminum boat companies with excellent reps.
