Up until a couple days before the election call, Eby and his advisors probably had a good theory of the case if they were running against KLF and a significantly split free-enterprise vote.
But they waited too long.
It’s not over yet. Watch the Surrey ridings.

Eby's desire to campaign against Trump, and then after that didn't work, to lecture people about how evil conservatives are, apparently wasn't enough to overcome a mood for change and a bit of disgruntlement over an unnecessary election. The attempt to wrongfoot the opposition failed; Chretien, Eby is not.

I don’t know a lot about BC politics but taking your constituents hard earned money and giving it to those who refuse to contribute to society is not a recipe for success

BC Election: David Eby to resign as BC NDP leader
Calling a snap election turned into the biggest gamble of David Eby’s political career – and it didn’t pay off. Eby says he will resign as leader of the BC NDP after losing the provincial election to Lorne Doerkson and the BC Conservatives. Eby, who was projected to hold on to his seat in...

As of right now, the vote split does not appear to be an issue in Surrey, except for possibly Surrey Centre, if the BCCP lose their slim lead there. So far, possibly an issue in a couple Vancouver and Vancouver Island ridings.
But those ridings won’t affect much in terms of majority or minority.

I would have been shocked if he didn’t resign.

Free at last ...
David Eby stepped down as the leader of the B.C. NDP Saturday, after voters delivered a resounding rebuke of his snap election call.
“This is obviously something I do with a very heavy heart. But it is time for new leadership within our party,” Eby said.
In a somber concession speech, Eby said he wished premier-designate Lorne Doerkson his best—and that he meant that “sincerely.”
Eby’s remarks came after the B.C. Conservatives swept to a decisive majority, relegating the New Democrats to Opposition status for the first time in nearly a decade.
“This is obviously not the result that any of us wanted. A number of my colleagues, some of the hardest working MLAs I know for their communities, were not elected tonight. It breaks my heart, and I accept full responsibility for that outcome,” Eby said.
