B.C. Government (Conservative Majority), 2026-(NLT)2031

So what happens to Doerkson? He is now the premier of the province but he is only an interim leader and my their constitution he cannot stand as a candidate for the position he has won? Do they change their by-laws? Do they not run a convention at all for 4 years? I can't find any previous situation to compare it with

Eby won his own safe riding and is only 3% ahead, yikes.

Except Point Grey is not exactly a traditional NDP riding. Christy Clark, Gordon Campbell, and Kim Campbell (yes, that Kim Campbell, no relation) have held that riding in the past.

It’s one riding the BC Conservatives might have won had there not been a Centre BC candidate.

All indications are the party will change the constitution to allow him to remain permanent leader.

I don’t envy him. He’s got a divided party slapped together at the last minute held together with animosity towards the NDP. Sooner or later, that animosity may turn inwards. Does he have the stuff to hold them together? The most we know about him is he’s a nice guy. BC politics is a blood sport. Nice guys generally don’t last in blood sports. I wish him well though. My home province needs all the help it can get.

By "sooner or later", I assume you mean "before Christmas 2026"?

Does this election result 'help' or 'hinder' current/future pipelines, whether gas or oil?

On the provincial government side, it would definitely help.

On their relationship with First Nations and their ability to work positively with them, I’m not sure. The BCCP wants to repeal DRIPPA to get these things done, but many First Nations won’t take this lying down. Depending on how they handle it, I can see protests, road blocks and lengthy court battles. The NDP has effectively handed First Nations veto power and management of a lot of Crown land. Courts are generally not favourable to winding back authorities and powers given to First Nations. The jury is still out see if the BCCP is sophisticated enough to thread that needle.

The new premier mentioned cutting red tape, I wish him well. If he can get someone to go into the layers and layers of permit policies and rationalize them I`d be over the moon. I know that Carney wants this done, lets hope that Doerksen can get the municipalities on line.

There are still 9 ridings that have not been called, many of which are very close, all with one poll not reporting yet. Many of these are in urban ridings. Even if the NDP wins all of them, the BCCP will have a healthy majority.

Another reason I thought of for this blowing up in Eby’s face: most of the time, governments will wait for the opposition to get a permanent leader before they call a snap election. I was surprised when Eby still pulled the trigger when KLF left. I think that alone left a bad taste in voters’ mouths. Interim leaders tend to be the most liked and respected of caucus members.

Since we have a new (pretty different) government in play, here's the new thread. Carry on ....
