Apparently a multi-vehicle collision contributed to the explosion:

Three people were killed and 19 others injured in a fatal bus collision and fire that occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in Calgary’s Saddle Ridge neighborhood. The incident took place just after 1:00 p.m. on the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E.

The crash involved a chain-reaction collision between two Calgary Transit buses and multiple other vehicles. A transit bus traveling northbound struck a series of cars before hitting a second bus stopped at a bus stop. The impact caused the natural gas tanks on the stationary second bus to ignite, resulting in a severe fire and explosion that engulfed the vehicle's roof.

Key details include:

  • Casualties: Three passengers on the burning bus were declared dead at the scene. 19 people were injured, with 10 transported to hospitals; one person sustained life-altering injuries, and a Calgary Police Service member suffered minor injuries.
  • Vehicles Involved: The crash involved eight vehicles total, including two natural gas-powered transit buses.
  • Response: 12 fire trucks responded to the scene. The driver of the second bus was able to exit, while the driver of the first bus suffered serious injuries and required hospitalization.
  • Investigation: Police are investigating the cause of the collision and fire, with no immediate determination on whether impairment, speed, or distraction played a role.
