C7/C8 accessories recommendations

Would it be worth getting a pistol light in the off chance of being issued a pistol? Or a thumb rest takedown lever?
Not knowing what role you have, I’d say no.
Furthermore I would do absolutely no modification to the pistol at all. My (lack of) faith in the P320 design is pretty well established here, and I would strongly recommend against any sort of deviation from the issued system less it be used against you when it desires to ND.

As @PuckChaser points the issues with really any equipment that you can’t train heavily before operational usage.

If you have a pistol light you need a new holster. If you don't know what you're doing with weapon lights you're going to have a light ND, expose your position and in a real war get yourself killed.

On the upside: finding your way out of a darkened theatre more quickly ;)

Naw. Save your money until you know you're getting issued a pistol, AND, you know you're allowed to use it. Your CoC might tell you you're not allowed non-issued kit attachments for firearms.

Can't go wrong with an expensive headlamp (plus a backup) and a nice hand flashlight.

I want to say the holster is fairly rigidly enforced as the only approved option to carry the c22 in. I wouldn’t do anything to violate that.

I remember us not being able to add stuff to our rifles in Afg. Is this more relaxed now ?

Based on what I've seen it looks like units are more relaxed with aftermarket gear.

It looks like some still need to push the envelope and try and add really goofy stuff or red dots from Temu.

I remember getting jacked up for taking off my C79 and putting on that plastic battle sight. I much prefer irons, I guess plastic in this case.

I also wanted to make my rifle lighter, not heavier.

So don't go full mall ninja and drop in a threaded barrel and muzzle device for literally no goddamn reason.

That's one of the reasons I don't like using an Elcan Spectre. It's a brick. More of a fan of either an Eotech Holosite or ACOG and a 45o offset reddot.

Technically the below CANFORGEN is still in effect but it’s only barely enforced in some units due to the utter ridiculousness of large aspects of it.

CANFORGEN 076/14 DLEPS 14/014 091431Z MAY 14

CANFORGEN -076/14 - NON-AUTHORIZED SMALL ARMS MODIFICATIONS

UNCLASSIFIED

REFS: A. C-04-005-014/AG-000, AUTHORIZATION, PRIORITIZATION AND REPORTING OF MODIFICATIONS, 1995-03-28

B. CANFORGEN 075/10, UNAUTHORIZED PROCUREMENT OF OPERATIONAL EQUIPMENT, 291815Z MAR 10 [/canforgens-detail/075-10_e]

C. C-71-050-014/MD-000, DESCRIPTION AND PRINCIPLES OF SMALL ARMS, 1987-11-18

D. CAO 21-04, PAINT AND MARKING POLICY FOR LAND EQUIPMENT

IN ACCORDANCE WITH REFS A THROUGH D, FOREIGN ISSUED ITEMS AND PERSONALLY PROCURED ACCESSORIES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED ON ANY CAF SMALL ARMS. SUCH ADDITIONS OR ALTERATIONS CONSTITUTE ILLEGAL MODIFICATIONS AS DEFINED AT REF A. PAINTING OF CAF SMALL ARMS IS ALSO NOT AUTHORIZED EXCEPT FOR THE PAINTING OF SNIPER WEAPONS USING PAINT APPROVED BY THE TECHNICAL AUTHORITY DEFINED AT REF D.

THE EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM FOR SMALL ARMS CONTINUES TO IDENTIFY CASES IN WHICH UNITS AND USERS HAVE CONDUCTED SUCH MODIFICATIONS. WEAPON SYSTEM INTEGRITY AND PERFORMANCE CAN BE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY SUCH PRACTICES, CONSEQUENTLY PUTTING PERSONNEL SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT AT RISK.

AS DIRECTED AT REF A, THE RESPONSIBLE MAINTENANCE AUTHORITY IS AUTHORIZED TO REMOVE NON-AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS FROM EQUIPMENT. ANY SUCH ITEMS FOUND SHALL BE IMMEDIATELY REMOVED AND THE WEAPON RETURNED TO ITS APPROVED CONFIGURATION. THE MEMBER MAY RETAIN THESE ITEMS IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPLICABLE POLICIES AND CANADIAN LAW AS PERSONAL PROPERTY, BUT THEY SHALL NOT BE USED OR INSTALLED ON ANY CAF SMALL ARMS. UNAUTHORIZED PAINT SHALL ALSO BE REMOVED AND THE WEAPON SHALL BE RETURNED TO ITS ORIGINAL COLOR AND CONFIGURATION.

THE CONDUCT OF NON-AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS IS NOT TO BE TOLERATED AND MAY RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY OR ADMINISTRATIVE ACTION BY THE CHAIN OF COMMAND.

QUESTIONS REGARDING AUTHORIZED SMALL ARMS CONFIGURATIONS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE APPROPRIATE WEAPON TECHNICAL AUTHORITY OR THE SENIOR TECHNICAL AUTHORITY FOR SMALL ARMS (DIRECTOR SOLDIER SYSTEMS PROGRAM MANAGEMENT (DSSPM) 4-5-2).

I was thinking about mentioning that zinger.

Issued slings only troops 😁

I always got a kick out of the fact that CANSOF was issuing M4 RAS on the C8's, and all of the joint Future Warrior testing in Ft Benning was being done with M4 and M5 RAS (on C8 and C7 respectively), but that when that same weapon went back to the Coy CQ in Edmonton that same rail was then forbidden...

Solution - bring your own upper to work day ;)
